I went out today and bought some CCI v-max tipped ammo (.17 HMR) I was shooting at a 3" gong at 100. The POI's were all over the place. After 7 - 10 I quit and moved to 50 yards. It was pretty accurate at 50, but the POI's started to walk as my barrel got warmer.

I then went back to wally world and got some CCI TNT hollow points. I shot again at the 3" gong at 100. All rounds hit fairly accurately, and the barrel temp didn't matter at all. It kept shooting true.

What's up with that??

Re: Weird CCI Ammo Issue

Some lots are better than others... I usually buy by lot number and when I find a lot number that shoots well out of my HMR I'll buy that whole brick if it's still available.

I've found ammo from all brands that have variable accuracy. I had some federal vshock that shot awesome, but I tried some of the same ammo, different lot number and it was terrible.

The brick of hornady vmax that I have now shoots really well. But before that particular lot I was using CCI TNT and those were just as accurate.

Doesn't take much to blow the little .17 bullet around at 100 yards. Is this normal with your rifle or just this lot of ammo? Nothing loose on rifle? Base, rings, action screws all tight? What rest were you using?
