OK what are some Weird things you have found in the woods.
Back in Va when i was in my Teens we came across an old Steam Shovel on top of the Mountain that was left be The Burnrite Coal Co. Its gone now some one cut it up for scrap metal. and Three old graves on top of the Mountain have no clue how old they are or how people carried them up there. Lets hear what you have found. Thanks

Re: Weird finds

Old cattle farm with orange, lime and lemon trees around the ruins. This is in the middle of thick woods-palms-bamboo. Really weird location. There were 2'x8'trenches framed by poured concrete too. Very weird.

Re: Weird finds

A couple years ago, during the deer hunt, I spotted what looked like a rolled truck. I thought it was an old wreck, but I'd never seen it before. But when we started seeing cops all over the mountain and a helicopter started circling, we knew what was going on.

As seen through my 8X Swarovsky.

Story as far as I know (from what 1st hand people said): Some rich kid driving up the mountain in the dark(5:15am), smoking weed, drove off the edge of a steep hill(see pics) Girlfriend was ejected from the truck after a couple hundred yards of rolling. He stayed in the truck till it stopped miraculously, and had he rolled another couple hundred yards or so, he'd of gone over a steeper hill and rolled a half mile or so and not found for a day or more. As it was he was pinned in the truck, his GF climbed up the hill in the dark, disoriented, and unaware of where she was, walked down the road until she ran into some other hunters, who called 911. Since nobody knew exactly where it had happened, they spent several hours combing over the mountainside looking. We saw them, and later saw the truck, but didn't put 2 and 2 together until they had found the truck.
I have hauled a deer up that hill, the pictures do not give you an accurate idea of how steep it is, I cannot believe that the truck stopped rolling, there was no reason to. He was airborne for a good 40-50 yds and then rolled a good 1/4 mile or better with nothing to stop him. And it just gets steeper, kid must of had an angel watching him that morning.

Re: Weird finds

I haven't found anything too weird. I guess the weirdest thing would be a man made pond that was in the middle of nowhere. It used a 3 foot creek rock and mortar wall to hold the water in, it was all of 1/2 an acre. There was a brick and mortar entry stair case and a foundation that was long since deteriorated. This was on Jefferson Proving Grounds in southern Indiana.

Re: Weird finds

Ran into an old apple/peach orchard ,LOADED with fruit, that had been planted years ago in a remote canyon along a creek by miners who worked the area. Kind of a nice respite from hiking....until we spotted the bear sign !

Re: Weird finds

A guy that I was hunting with found the remains of a cheapo single shot break open rifle up against a tree. Stock was rotting - it was all rusted - had been there for a while. Was in a difficult to access area that was well off the road. Said he looked around for bones/remains but didn't see anything.

Re: Weird finds

One time while gathering wild horse, in the UL Bend country, of Montana. I found this rock shelf with a sandstone rock wall along the front. I climbed up in there and found 4 old .45-70 cases, and a canteen made of brass. Several pieces of leather, but i could not ID them.

Re: Weird finds

I once found an old I believe .36 cal revolver still loaded (you could still see the lead in the cylinder) and rusted clean to pieces. Wooden grips were gone long ago.

Re: Weird finds

I had a friend that found a dead guy at the base of his tree the first day of deer season in Delaware. I think it turned out to be a gang shooting. He was dumped there after the shooting.

Yes, he kept it. It was way past being shootable, but I think he eventually hung it on the wall in his shop as a decoration....

Re: Weird finds

The weirdest thing I've found was a simple, intact snake skeleton. Never seen one before, or after.

Did find a "dug-out" little, what I'll call a shanty, in the middle of the woods. Had to crawl down inside, where you could sit up, and it was full of junk, from about every traveler/hunter/hiker that had ever been in there.

Have found several mines. Guess I have to try harder to contain my "curious-ness", and stay out of those places.

Guess I've found two or three tiny cabins in the woods while elk or bear hunting. Have found "Bench-Marks", Cairns....you name it. Even found a big 'old hole where a cow elk had fallen in, but nothing left but a skeleton.

I spend a ton of time in the woods.....

Re: Weird finds

The foundations from a 1600-1700's Dutch copper mining village, about 200yd off the Appalachian Trail in NJ, along the Delaware Valley.

The residual wreckage of a small plane crash, within 5 miles of that village, also within shouting distance of the AT.

Very bad, indeed. Instantly boiled him. Place smelled like fresh brisket. The sad thing is that his partner left him there and then came back for their tools.

Guy had a criminal record and it was not his first issue with copper theft. Bastardo got what he deserved.

Re: Weird finds

Not really wierd, but one time I found a guy's wallet in one of our box stands that is in a field close to a public road. Cool thing was that it had $375 cash in it and we considered it his trespass fee. Ole Danny bought us a lot of beer and steaks. Thanks again for trespassing, Danny!

Re: Weird finds

meth lab, seasonal grow operation, and a weird make shift shelter that was only 50 yards off a dirt road. Great reasons why i carry all the time when i am outdoors.

Re: Weird finds

We found a 1998 Ford F150 dumped on our ranch, probably stolen and or used to run dope from Mexico. We reported it and contacted last known owner, he said he sold it to Joe Blow but the title was never registered. Since no one claimed it we got a clear title 60 days later....... The truck runs great and we outfitted it with a high rack for hunting.
