Well I went out the the colorado rifle club today. I started out on the 550 range bangin some steel. I was taking some time to try to read the wind with only mirage and it is official, I suck at it. LOL, There is not much there to read off of other than the weeds on the berms. I also played around with some various ammo I had on hand. I started with FGGM 168's and then some of the nosler custom shop 168's. The nosler shot 2 moa higher at 550. Next I ran some winchester white box 147's. Those were just for the hell of it to practice. This is my first outing with the atlas bipod, it is great. I was having an issue with a little rifle hop with the harris. I know this is a problem with me, not the bipod but, with the atlas hop is not an issue. It seems to me the little rocking the atlas allows took care of the minor issue I was having. I got a big round rear bag from triad and I had a hard time with it. The bag is fairly firm so it was hard to get very much range of elevation from it. I have used some in the past that had a hand strap and you squeeze it to change height. I found them much easier to use in the field where I am constantly changing position.
I moved over to the 1000yd range but the wind had kicked up enough that I was tired of eating dirt so I just hung around for about an hour bs'ing with the guys. It was a good trip, the weather was nice untill the wind kicked up. Well I am off to tear down the gun to get the sand out of it. It got pretty gritty. Later all

I've been out there a few times now and its a really nice range. However, its very windy, and its windy every time. Its on the plains so there aren't any trees or terrain to slow down the wind.

I see it as a good thing though, you shoot there a lot and you'll get good at reading wind. That steel range is fun. I want to get an IPSC steel target to set on the berm of the high power range.

There's a beginner's match of sorts next week that sounds fun. I want to get into some of their F class matches. We'll have to hook up and shoot some time. I need to finish my load development this week so I can load up some ammo for the upcoming matches.

I will do that. I'm gonna be busy finishing load development and going to one of their matches this weekend. After that though I'm looking to load up some nice sized lots of ammo, buy me a steel target, and go bang some steel at the high power range on a more regular basis.

i actually find the wind at CRC pretty tame because it is rarely full value, so it's not a lot of adjustment, I have a couple of videos shot at CRC that look like the wind is blowing hard, but really it's not bad, as if comes from behind the targets.

If you look at this Southwest video it was shot on the steel range at 550 yards on a target that is 8.75" wide, and the head is 2X2. You can even hear the wind blowing in the microphone, so it sounds strong, usually 8 to 12MPH but barely 1/4 value.

Stick with it, it has a lot of great qualities there, if you have trouble doping the wind get a kestrel and read it at your position, let the downrange work itself out. But there are plenty of flags if you need extra help.

Thanks Frank. That video was what turned me on to that range in the first place. This was my first trip out there after the orientation day. I did shoot that day but only 20 rounds before I started shivering. It was freezing there in january.
There were no wind flags anywhere on the 550 range during this outing. Maybe later on they put em up. The wind was fairly strong for about an hour when I got there. I was getting sandblasted for a while. Either way I am looking forward to the practice and to the 1000yd range. It only takes me an hour to get there so its closer and there is no problem getting some distance.
I have started on my suppressor so hopefully in a week or two I will have my whole rig set up and will start shooting on a regular basis.

I've only been out there a half dozen times so you certainly have a better feel for it than me. It seems like it shifts with the time of day to me. As if it blows west across the ranges in the morning, calms down and comes south right at you in the middle of the day, then blows east later on. Then again I went on one trip and it was literally switching from one gust to the next, full value left to right, no value tail wind, no value head wind, full value right to left. It was almost running around me counter clockwise.

I'll say this, it really illustrates the importance of using reticle holds for windage correction. You can feel the difference one gust to the next, you'd lose your mind constantly trying to dial those changes.

For the other guys that head out there, I find those big target boards make spotting your misses on the high power range near impossible. If you buy a couple $1 dollar 2x2 stakes at home depot you can tap them into the berm behind the pits and staple your target to them. Then if you do miss your shot, you can see the dirt kick up with the impact, employ the believe the bullet philosophy and make a hit on the next shot.

I want a steel target for the same reason with the audible benefit. We outta get a sniper's hide get together going sometime and get all the locals out there for some shooting and a barbecue or somethin.

I'm coming over there in a few weeks to shoot the 1000 yard benchrest match. Benchrest is not my normal game, I'm a F-Class shooter but it's fun. You should come out and see all the really BIG heavy guns. I just shoot my regular F-Open gun.

Ribs...listen to this guy. I was thinking burgers and dogs or something thats quick and easy! Maybe do it at the HP range and set up some steel down range to play with. Have to look at their events calendar and pick a saturday during the summer somewhere when they don't have a match going on that range.

Might be fun to get some of the local crowd together for hand shakes and a little shooting. Might just teach each other something by accident. I will have a look at the events calendar later and see how it looks.

As for the ribs it never hurts to aim high. lol
