Hunting & Fishing western colorado maybe craig

Re: western colorado maybe craig

I have not hunt Craig, but East of Meeker. The only thing is the areas around there are hunt pretty hard, plenty of orange and out of state plates. Doubt anyone is gonna give up any honeyholes out there. Here is the link to the DOW mapping website, it has coordinates, area resources and game migration patterns.

The funny thing is you almost always more deer in the road on the way to the BLM, than in the BLM. There are thousands of acres of Nat forrest, so if you are willing to hump, you can find some nice spots.

IWhere are you?CO is over run and over hunted every year and people will not share their honey holes. I would look else where. This is coming from A guy that used to go every year but stopped two years ago

It is worth using google for the colorado div of wildlife and getting the maps that they provide. They provide a reasonably accurate picture of success/odds/populations. As noted above you will see lots of orange, most of the out of state hunters prefer road hunting either in their vehicles or they just walk a few hundred yards off the road and then parallel it. Because of the outfitters you will be hard pressed to find any landowners to let you on, even for a fee. Using BLM maps(to find the BLM), the DOW maps to find the location of herds and google earth, you can find areas to hike to. If you see roads/ATV trails it will be very WELL hunted. As your profile is not filled out not sure where you are from, but 3-500 yard shots are the common. If they are less you need to be good at quick shots as they are usually putting quick distance between you and them. Dont forget ALL deer tags are on a draw only system, due early April. Good late season tags can take at least 5-7 years to draw.

Good luck with your hunts.

Re: western colorado maybe craig

Yeah I am just trying to find a new mule deer hunting spot that is free. Our spot in Nebraska lost about 90% of their deer to EHD this year so I think I will not go back for a few years. I am from Central Missouri but we hunt and fish all over the US. We stopped hunting CO a few years ago because of the amount of orange but I need to be able to hunt close to a truck because I bring my Dad and he is elderly and can't do a lot of hiking.

Re: western colorado maybe craig

There was less this year than last, not sure if its due to the economy, draw system or people just got tired of coming. Seems to be more bow hunters, but who knows what the real numbers are.
