I have a remington long throat 700 ltr, 2.950 coal. I modified my magazine to duplicate the Wyatt extended box mag. So now i can make my coal whatever I want. SO i was wondering what you guys have tried for the 175 smk, whats the least amount of bearing surface you have left in case neck.

Re: What 175smk coal's have you tried.

A general rule of thumb is to leave at least one diameter of bearing surface in the case. i.e. A 308 keeps aproximately .308" of bearing length in case neck. Now I know there are a few cases that doesn't work with. The 300 WinMag is one of those. But for neck tension sake any more in the case neck isn't going to help the neck tension.

The OAL that works in someone else's rifle isn't going to do you any good. Odds of getting a right hit are about 10K:1

If this is something you are serious about, buy the tools or find a friend that has them and measure your own chamber. But be aware that changing the OAL to very short distances from the lands or touching WILL increase the chamber pressures in your rifle.

when i measure how much bearing surface is in neck of factory 168, or 175 fed. Gold metal match I get .260 bearing surface in neck. my rifles coal is 2.931 with the 175 smk. I was gonna start my loads halfway between 2.800 and 2.931, which makes 2.865. That leaves .200 bearing surface in neck, is that enough in your opinion?

If it holds the powder in... You may have ignition problems with neck tension being reduced. But you could give it a try. One of my rifles like 2.825" OAL. But it has a custom chamber.
