Guy at work got his FFL a few years back. He finally retired and opened up a gun shop. Every now and then he comes back up to the office to visit and we all end up talking guns and whatnot. That part is pretty normal.
The problem is that this guy is a complete know it all idiot. He'll spout off about something like he is an expert and he won't know shit about what he is talking about.
I asked him today if he had any in stripped AR lowers in stock? Told him that I'd found enough pieces laying around my shop less the lower to put another one together. This idiot tells me it wouldn't matter anyway because I'd have to have a permit to buy one. I looked at him funny and said "are you drunk or something"? The dude started snickering at me like I was some kind of dumb ass or something.
It really disappoints me when I realize that there are blow hards like this that make the media stereotype for gun owners valid.
Anybody else ever met a person in the business that is completely worthless?

Re: What a let down......

Sounds like this guy has a case of "gun store attitude" which I can do without. The typical gun store attitude just drives me to the internet to shop.

They have a lot of gun store attitude over at that lightfighter forum.

Re: What a let down......

I got my FFL last year and opened a shop... I get it from the other side... it's taught me that a LOT of the sterotypes are valid... I have my SOT and have a few cans in stock, like precision rifles of course, and I like 1911s.... I get that silencers are illegal...ARs are machine guns, SBRs abd SBS are illegal and any black, OD, or tan bolt action is a "sniper rifle"

Re: What a let down......

Poor guy also said today that stainless steel is horrible. His reason was, that once it's worn out that's it because they can't be worked on. He said "once the barrel is gone it's gone and you may as well just throw it away". My favorite thing was "don't get a 20" barrel, it won't be accurate if you plan on taking shots out to 200 yards".

Re: What a let down......

Yeah Force... I know your example happens as well. The difference is that this guy owns a shop and he actually claims to know something. He actually has some obligation I would think, to not mislead people. A person that walks into a shop and is innocently ignorant to guns hasn't claimed to be an expert.

Re: What a let down......

I have a gun shop nearby where the owner is a retired special ops Marine but because he had a health problem he didn't get a DD-214 and another shop told me that 1911s are only good for about 1000 rounds before the slides crack and blow up.

There's a great article/copy somewhere in the hide, can't remember where right off hand.
I read it a few months ago but can't remember what post,
anyway, it was about a gunsmith in TX with a long warehouse he used for an indoor precision rifle range (100 -200 yd, can't remember actual distance).
They were getting the highest accuracy out of a 21"(+/-) barrel. It had to do with barrel harmonics. (6mm i belive?)
They tried all different calibers, barrels, rifles, lengths, etc...
Range was a night thing, 1 at a time type deal & has been closed for many years.
I wish I could find the article again. Well worth the read.

Re: What a let down......

I mostly get that kind of attitude from supposed ex "military snipers." Everyone was a scout/sniper, and after about 5 minutes I realize I know more than they do, and I'm a freaking hobbyist. I don't really know shit, but I'm Yoda around these MFs. I know it's off topic but, If you were to tell me you were a cook in the Marines for 15yrs you have my respect for life. No need to embellish. Drives me crazy.

Here's a link to the Houston warehouse shooting article:

FWIW, we've got one gun shop where I live..... only one of the employees is decent to folks there. Have thought more than once about opening up one nearby, hiring him to run it!!!! Maybe a couple hotties from the local... club, as assistant rangemasters. Ought to improve traffic there, hmmm?

Re: What a let down......

I work for a shooting sports wholesaler as a salesman and it would blow you away the stuff I hear spouted as "gospel truth." Of course these same people call me expecting me to know everything about everything. I don't. Of course I'm not afraid to admit that I don't. Usually one of the other salesmen will know.

Blow me away some of the stuff I hear.
