What am I doing wrong?

I am working on my technique with a vintage Anschutz 1407. The attached photo represents approximately 25 shots at 100 yds with SK ammo. No real wind to speak of. I am shooting with a bipod and working on properly loading it, my cheekweld and trigger control. What I do not understand is the left to right stringing. I would expect the group to be more circular.

Good rife.If I shot that (good shooting BTW) I would examine my cheek weld,Shoulder tension,trigger squeese one at a time. I reread your post. go with no tension on bipod first as it is easier(to me). I think palming causes left to right stringing(don't push with hand) This is what gets me, I catch my self chasing the last shot not the same sight picture.

That's actually an excellent group for 100 yards... despite the very unique stringing. Out of curiosity, is this the first time it has happened or is it a regular occurrence?

I think you are doing well. Your rifle is pretty accurate!

A 1 mph full value wind will give you a nearly half inch at 100Y. A 1 mph wind increase/decrease is hard to distinguish.

I've had the best results not loading the bipod. Me personally... loading is good for recoil control but not all it's cracked up to be for small groups.

Left/right stringing might be due to lateral deflection caused by
the force generated by the rifling when it imparts twist to the projectile?.

I found that holding the left leg of the bipod and pressing downwards
damped most of the lateral motion and tightened my groups.
Might work for you also.

Ensure that the trigger finger does not touch the stock, only the trigger. Make an effort to always use the same part of the finger to touch the trigger, and that the finger presses straight back on the trigger.

Any sideways force from the trigger finger to the stock or trigger usually translates to a sideways deflection of the shot.

Stuff like this really stands out more once the accuracy gets more precise.

I think for bi-pod shooting you are doing just fine
that being said left/right hits are generally trigger pull
try putting your rifle in a good benchrest and pinching the trigger

From this lifetime Anschutz guy.........get off the bipod, Get on a supported front rest with maybe a rear bag if you have one, get a level to see if rifle is centered, light shoulder contact. Much of your results will depend on quality of optics. I have a Redfield #3200 20X. My M1413 will shoot a smoking quarter sized hole with Fiocchi match ammo and for some reason not with Eley or Lapua....xray9 (actually, I think you were just creating a "happy face" logo)

Optics quality is not an issue. I am using 6.5-20X Leupold that passes the box test at various powers. I will continue to work on my trigger control. I have suggestions on how to better load the bipod and to not use it. For the prone shooting I want to do, the bipid is the way to go right now. So do I load the bipod or not and why not? Also, why light shoulder contact? I find a firm shoulder contact works better for me.

Top, My thoughts exactly! 22LR @ 100 yds...if one gnat farts at 50 yds, you will have left to right stringing. Still, very good shooting!

First, as others said, group is good. I think you and the rifle do have more potential. As others said as well, get rid of the bipod.
Since it appears you have a place to shoot prone, do so with a tight sling and or front and rear bags. I prefer sling and bags when time permits.

I would make wind my first guess as well. Try shooting either very early in the day just after sun up or the last hour of day light. Sun heats the earth's crust, warm air rises, wind comes from it somewhere.
