Noob question. Every time I fire my 308 from a bench the recoil throws the rifle off to the right. I'm using a bypod anda bag at the rear. I have no problem hitting the target, but have to re sight to take second shot. I've tried holding firmly and loosened up my grip no change. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Rifle is a savage 10fp with original stock.

You probably will receive more responses if you post this in the "Basic Marksmanship" forum. I would concure with the two previous posts though, at least starting there. Good luck!

To elaborate on the suggestion already made, if you do some reading here on natural point of aim you will find it refers to where your body and rifle naturally line up.

Set the rifle on the bench, then close your eyes and get settled in, open your eyes and where the crosshairs are pointed is your natural point of aim. That may or may not be where your target is, rather than squirm to make the rifle point at the target, keep the rifle and your body static in relation to each other and move your body and the rifle so the crosshairs are on the target.

If you just pivot the rifle, or your body, independent of one another you will find after you fire the rifle is probably pointed right back where you started. After adjusting, do the same thing, close your eyes, breathe, open them up and see if the rifle is still pointed at the target, if it isnt, readjust again.

You might also not be squared up directly behind the rifle. I found when new and unfamiliar with positioning my body to get the rifle to recoil squarely that a good rule of thumb is that which ever direction the rifle recoils, your body needs to move the opposite to square up.

If your rifle recoils right, your body needs to move left to get squared up.

+1 more vote for it being (at least partially) due to you not being straight behind the rifle/acquiring your natural POA.

Also, are you properly loading your bipod?? If not, that will explain some bipod hop when shooting on a hard surface like a wood or concrete bench. See here for more info on proper technique for loading your bipod (click the LL video in the link):
