What are the “builds” in your head?

I was looking at the precision rifle “show ‘em” thread and read a post that someone had. Build under way, but was putting another together in his head. I do the same thing, and thought it would be interesting to know what others are thinking. I’ll go first:

I sent my freshly-DROSed Deviant long action back to Bugholes yesterday, to start the long wait for it to be returned with a Bartlein 300 Norma barrel and TT trigger. In the mean time (inspired by The Switch), ordered a Manners MCS-EHF1A and a Proof .308 Savage pre-fit for my TL3 to use as a hunting rifle next Fall. But last weekend, I shot a bunch of groups in the .3s and one .18 with the TL3/Shilen/XLR rifle, and now I’m thinking, “Why screw up a good rifle? Maybe I should just gets another TL3 (or SR3), and have a dedicated hunting rifle”.

Meanwhile, I’ve been thinking a Howa 1500 Mini Action on an MDT LSS would be a good rifle to just work on FoM.

Is there a 12-step program for this?

I’ve been thinking about rebarreling the 223 to a 20 practical or 6x45 or 223ai or just 223 again.

Ive been thinking about a 6.5 grendel in a semi for practical pig purposes but ehh, they just don’t appeal.

I want a bench gun, 6br or something small. Maybe 6bra. Something that will feed my tinkering. Maybe a slow twist for a couple hundred yard precision with 60-70 grs.

I hope I dont build anything though.

Got a Tikka in a Game Scout thats currently a .22-250. Once that barrel is cooked it’ll be getting a Hardy CF 16” .308 barrel and a can. Looking for excuses to shoot that barrel out....

also so have an action waiting to be turned into an all-carbon .300wsm.

Building a gun is half the fun. My build is my first. I'm starting with a Savage 10 FCP-SR 24" in 6.5 Creedmoor. Since it's my first and I'm stuck on Vortex I mounted a 6-24X50 Crossfire II in Vortex Pro rings. Adding Atlas BT10 V8 bipod and front rail (ordered) to the original Accustock which I hate *but* that's getting tossed this Spring and replaced with an MDT LSS-XL gen2 chassis, Ergo Suregrip, and a XLR Extreme buttstock.

I'll build it and then shoot it as much as I can this year and then tweak it next Winter when I gain some skills and figure out how it all works.

I have a Howa mini chambered in .223 right now, and I'm thinking of either going .223 AI or 20 Practical with it... may go Boyd's for the stock. It already has an upgraded bolt knob and a Timney trigger on it.

Also thinking about doing a T/C Encore in 45/70 to run 500 gr subs through a SiCo Hybrid.

Also thinking about either a TL3 or Mausingfield switch barrel setup in 280 AI and 6.5 Addiction... can't decide if I want to go with carbon fiber barrels on this one. It'll wear a Minox ZP5 5-25.

I had in my head a 20 Vartarg build, always wanted one, why? because it has 22-250 ballistics, super good barrel life, super low recoil/rifle upset, sub 18gr of powder, low barrel heat on fast strings, and I just think it's a neat little case.

That got quashed when I found and traded into two custom 20-221 fireball Ackley Improved rifles with low round count, the reamer and go gauge, custom dies, 400 brass and some loaded rounds (fireforming loads) and 600 bullets. Even with the fireforming loads they are both shooting awesome. When sighting in the heavy barrel M700 bench rifle, 5 rounds went into .35" and the walking varminter CZ527, 3/4". Expecting better after load work in formed brass!!!

Thinking a Howa mini in 224 Valkyrie would be cool too. I have a Manners stock cert to use. Hoping the factory trigger can be adjusted decent and maybe I'll get lucky by getting a good shooting factory rifle, if not I'll try a Pacnor 3 groove.

For most of my adult life I've wanted a top of the line single shot benchrest rifle with the fanciest stock I can find, the Panda drop port is most desirable right now. It'd be big money so it'll have to wait. Spife, yes, 6BRA is the cartridge I want too! As I age, heck I'm already old, I might transition to more bench style shooting, so I'll sell a few other rifles to help offset costs on the no expense spared wonder gun.

Well, my fantasy rifle is a 6BRA fortner actioned tactical rifle, lol. Fat chance aye, but never say never!

OH, I almost forgot, add a BIG ole nasty ELR rifle to the list. maybe 375-416B???

Im exploring the wonderful world of Tikkas! Ive pretty much had my fill of the customs out there. I just wanna try somwthing different now and I had a Tikka in the past and remember loving the heck out of that thing.
I just bought one for its action and am currently deciding on chassis/stock now. KRG Whiskey 3 looks nice but unless the enclosed forend accesory comes out for the Tikka Whiskey 3 chassis, ill also be heavily considering owning a Manners stock for the first time.
I think both Manners and KRG have exciting things to show at SHOT though (Manners Tikka mini chassis and stocks incoming!), so either way im waiting at least 2 more weeks before making a choice. In the meantime, gunna send my lil' Lite to be rebarreled.

For shits n giggles, if i had unlimited funding, i would probably do a DLC'd Curtis Vector action with multiple different caliber barrels and bolts, a KRG Habu Chassis and a PMII... Let me dream.

It's a sickness.

I had a 243AI build in my heads for years, then finally started doing it. Ended up with 24" heavy sporter barrel on a Savage action, McMillan A3 Sporter, factory flush detachable mag.

While I was building that I started thinking about a precision AR. The election was coming up and things weren't looking good, so I went ahead and did it. Krieger barrel, Rock River upper/lower, ALG M-LOK handguard, Luth-AR fixed buttstock.

At the same time I decided I needed a 20 Practical, and ordered an XLR Element chassis, bought a Savage donor, and ordered a Shilen 24" barrel.

About the time that was going together I started thinking about doing an elk hunt the next fall (2017) and a 338 Edge. So I ordered up the parts and by last spring was assembling. Stiller Predator, McGowen 30" Sendero contour barrel with Remage nut, Jewell trigger, Wyatt's extended box, Heathen self install brake. Shot well to 2000 yds and took an elk at 715yds with it.

As those parts were on order I shot my first F-class match with the 243AI and liked it, so I got a dedicated build going...Panda action with 32" Bartlein barrel, McMillan F-class stock, Jewell trigger.

Then my wife declared she wanted an AR, and who can say non to that, so I build a basic lightweight build for her.

Just before the 338 Edge parts came in and while the F-class parts were on order, I decided I wanted to build a 6X45 as a general lightweight shooter and plinker to try out the round in case I want to build one for my daughter to start hunting with. Just got all the parts in and started bedding it tonight. Remington donor action, McGowen 22" sporter barrel, MyMillan Game Scout.

Now I'm thinking I need a 458 SOCOM upper to hunt my property. I'm trying to convince myself I've got enough guns to work up loads for next year...

There are a few builds I would like to get started on. Unfortunately, probably have to do one at a time or the wife will shoot me with one of them lol.

18" light varmint contour .308. Rem or savage action, MDT LSS chassis collapsible stock. 1-6x24 scope. Light and handy to tote around the deer woods.

22" light varmint contour 6.5 CM Rem 700 action. KRG bravo chassis. 10x SWFA. "Long range" hunting type rifle.

26" 300 Win Mag varmint contour in MDT LSS-XL Gen 2 chassis. Savage or Rem action. Built one for my dad and I just love shooting it. Unsure on scope for this one.

The other bolt guns I've built so far have used criterion barrels. So far all three have been shooters, so no need to fix that which isn't broken.

Not really a "build," but I'm thinking about picking up a Howa 1500 6.5 Creedmoor 24" threaded barreled action from Brownells, and drop it into a KRG X-Ray or Bravo depending on a pending decision. Should get me into a 6.5 caliber gun set up exactly how I want it for well under $1,000 without the hassle of selling/buying/upgrading parts. Looking forward to trying out a few "local" amateur PRS matches.

Pretty much a FN SPR but in the A4 stock, chambered for 6.5CM not 308, and AICS style bottom metal. I think it would be a fun different rifle to take to a few local PRS matches.

Agree with this statement completely. All my builds are actually upgrades to existing rifles with only one exception. For example upgrading my old .308 to shoot 6.5 PRC, Stock upgrades to my son's .308, New proof upper for my 6.5 Grendel. Then there's completing an AR 10 build at some point by end of year. Want to spend some serious time practicing with what I already have! Already forgot about the 300 Norma Mag in an DTA SRS that was bouncing around in my pea-brained head!

I have a Weatherby Vanguard (Howa 1500) in 22-250 that I have been thinking about rebarreling for a while now. Seeing Criterion is going to be doing Savage style pre-fits has me thinking of doing a 6.5 Creedmoor with a Bell and Carlson target/competition stock. Maybe a Timney trigger. And a Nightforce SHV on top. Budget build for a lot of guys, but should do everything I need.

Thanks! I've been wanting to do this one for a few years now. I was on the fence between 6.5 Grendel and the 6mm but with the new 95gr and 105-115gr options out there for 6mm it's a no-brainer. Should mimic or nearly mimic a factory 6.5 Creedmoor trajectory with the heavies. I thought about going 6mm AR Turbo or Turbo 40 degree. Neck size and plug&play is too easy, though. I've fire-formed before and it's really not my thing. I suppose if I feel I need a boost I can do it later but I think for a Pdog, coyote, antelope, maybe deer gun within 1000 it will do fine.


I got the barrel through Stockys during one of their sales, right around $800 I believe. It was a special order and took 3 months but they gave me standard pricing on it. It's actually a Tikka T3 barrel but the 1.150" shank should just barely fit without a lip. Just waiting on Josh to get a reamer in to send the barrel and action off. I'll be sure to do a write-up on it either here or in the range report section when I get it all together.

I think you’ll be happy with the Howa. My HCR in 6.5CM (#6bbl) shoots multiple .4 MOA five-shot groups at 100-300 yards every time I take it to the range.

My TL3/Shilen .308 shoots .1 MOA better with me behind it, but the cost difference isn’t small.

Between the mini-action and CF barrel, that should make for the perfect hunting/stalking rig. Looking forward to seeing it completed.

I've really heard nothing but good things about Howa's. An M16 extractor, substantial integral recoil lug, three position safety, factory threaded barrel, and the ability to only pay for the barreled action completely fills my rifle wish list. I wish other brands would offer to sell barreled actions. I'd buy a T3x .243 in a heartbeat if I didn't know I'd be ditching the factory stock immediately.

Looking forward to getting started on the Howa, but with my wife being due any day now it'll probably be a while before I can afford to start...lol
