Re: WHAT BUGS ME about shooting flies

no problem, i was out shooting the rimfire comps yesterday, and a fly flew on the paper. i couldn't nail 'em, but left a neat track of where it was.

gave me some inspiration. now it's midnight, gotta get some ZZZZZ's (pun intended).

Re: WHAT BUGS ME about shooting flies

What range are we using on the target above? looks like a fun little challenge if we're all shooting from the same distance.

no clue. i just threw the target together, then figured putting some nomenclature on it, just in case.

if there is interest in getting this as a monthly thing, i'd imagine 25 or 50 yards to see what happens then maybe add it to the monthly short range competitions.

but that's up to everyone else - rules would be easy:

WHAT BUGS ME - or whatever you guys want to call it

Match: WBM25YD or WBM50YD (add a B for bench or P for prone after the YD)

Name: John D. Shooter
Rifle: Manufacturer, Model
Caliber: .22LRr, .22mag, .17HMR, .17HM2
Ammo: Manufacturer, type
Sights: Scope, other
Score:

the only decision would be if hitting them in the wings (that are outstretched and the grasshopper wings) counts or not.

i tried to match them up to the size of dead things found on the window sill in my garage to get some scale, the flies are slightly different sized on the target. i just came in from outside where it's now dimlight after sundown, looks that the print is bold enough to see at 50 yards in the low light through the scope so should be good in normal light.

sort of puts a spin on a dot drill and documents the ol' "it can hit a fly at X yards"

gradual higher point rating for the smaller the bug as it'll be harder to hit the flies than the bees or grasshopper.

just noticed i'm missing a P in PTs after the fly score, i'll edit it.

a dab of jelly or honey smeared on the target is popular.

taxidermy fees are cheap too

Re: WHAT BUGS ME about shooting flies

well i gave it a try today at 25 and 50 yards. 25 seemed "easy" but 50 was another story. the wind was left to right from 7mph, then gusting to 12 and 15 mph. i held for it but not enough.

then the wind just about stopped at about the same time i squeezed the trigger on the bottom bugs on the 50 yard target.

i also pulled big time on the grasshopper at 50 yards, it seemed like a big target even at 50, but don't take it for granted!

25yard

50 yard

the target was in the shade under some trees, (sunny day) but the bugs still had good contrast / visibility at 50 yards

if you guys want to add it as a short range match, i'm thinking 50 yards would be better than 25. although 25 was wasn't a walk in the park, it was still alot less challenging there than i thought it would be.

That's cause your not using the right bait!!

Seriously though I've had a lot of fun with ALL of your RF targets
and this is just another to add & mix it up. I'm sure it will raise
some eyebrows at the range for sure. In a good way, thx.

it's actually in the short range comp sticky, click on printable targets, scroll down.

what the heck, let's add it to the short range competitions.

if there's no problem with the target / scoring, and the winging doesn't count rule, all that's left is a distance. while shooting it, it seemed 25 yards was not that challenging with a scoped rifle, so let's try 50 yards for a starter for scoped, 25 yards for open, aperature, red dots.

i'm with nesikabay, that this would make a hell of a 75 yard target as we don't have one for 75, but alot of ranges only have 50 and 100 yard ranges.

i'll get it in the sticky for October. i have to start another thread so i can tie it in and so it'll be "neat"
