What can be learned from ES numbers?

I know that ES is the spread between your fastest and slowest shots in a given string. But what troubleshooting can you do with that? Larger numbers mean that possibly there is a variance in charge weight? Neck tension?

Shooting my 300 BLK, I was seeing ES numbers over 150. Seems like a lot to me. Possible my chrono was confused? I use the RCBS Chargemaster, so I know it's not a lab-grade scale but none of my other loads are that far off. I am guessing if it's not a chronograph issue, it's a neck tension problem. Does annealing help to make ES numbers more consistent?

Bonus question... any tips for lowering ES?

Thanks!

I am still fairly new to hand loading but I know firsthand that ES numbers can be a little deceiving, I think your SD is a slightly more important number to keep track of and to work at getting smaller. It might help to know the details of the load in which you are seeing these numbers and a little about your current reloading process.
