What can you tell me about this rifle?

I am considering trading for this rifle, but would like to know what the general consensus is on these guns. Is the asking price fair, and how do these rifles compare with GAP and others? Thanks!

First of all Im not for sure if GAP ever built barrels. Also, why are there holes in the bolt?

I would ask him who built the rifle. Then get the barrel manufacture name. There has been some machining work done on it because its got a thick recoil lug. Whoever put the badger knob on did a nice job, and the Mcree stocks are gaining popularity. Also ask him if its a factory remington trigger in it or a aftermaket piece. That barrel looks VERY similar to a Remington factory fluted barrel on their tactical series rifles. Becareful and get proof before spending that kind of money.

That could also be a older Remington 700 action. If you look at the back of the action there 2 screw holes in it. The older Remingtons came with that. Just be careful, I wouldnt do it if I were you.

Look at buying a Remington 5R or Tikka tactical (brand new). A set of Seekins bases and rings and a Falcon scope and youll even have some money left over for a couple boxes of ammo.

I would have to agree it looks like a factory remington barrel, and first and formost would be why dose he have holes in the bolt? The stock is worth probly more than the action and barrel.

I considered this rifle, he sent me some more pics of it. the holes in the reciever came from factory like that, the other was modified for a pull type bolt release that was a popular in the BR world. He stated to me the holes in the bolt were there from the factory, also said GAP did the barrel/action work, from the looks of it its cut in the M40 fashion but cannot be for sure without taking the rail off. If I was at home where I could look at this rifle in person I would,

Or even ask him what symbol is on gun (who built it) from GAP.

My opinion is that actions looks like junk. All the holes in the bolt. And why was the rear of the action port milled out? If it was just a .308 you woulnt need that done. Ask him it the action was previsouly used for cartridge desinged for long actions. (Like the 30-06 line)

If the work was done by GAP and the barrel was good id go for it but its hard to say. For me it would also need a little more work like a pacific tool new bolt, holes filled in and the whole action duracoated. Then it would be beautiful.

The reason I questioned the milling of the rear action port was because its such a old action that I could have been rebarreled several times in different calibers.

So was this a M40 build to begin with that ended up in a Mcree stock? Also why were the rear ports machined out like that? If I remember right I run my .308 at 2.810-2.875 depending on manufacture of bullet. Its still got plenty of room.

I just noticed the drilled/tapped holes on the side of the receiver. Its obviously an older action, as Remington used to drill the older actions for rear peep sights.

to me the barrel doesn't look factory (ask for a picture where GA Precision is stamped on the barrel), I don't see the radius taper at the chamber, it looks like a straight taper to me. If GAP did indeed build it, I think it is overall a good price. Sure the holes in the bolt body look like crap, but they won't affect anything accuracy wise. To me I don't know what purpose the holes in the bolt have, but they don't look to me like someone was just hacking on it, they are indexed at the same position on the bolt, and are both tapered holes. You start adding up the extras and it is a good buy: 10 rnd mags, extra front sections for the stock, 20 MOA rail, Knob...

I dont remember where I read about those holes on bolts, but IIRC they are put there in case you have a KABOOM the gasses escape from those holes or something. And that is not a factory tube or recoil lug on that rifle.
If you can confirm that GAP did the work on that rifle, then it is a steal at 2k!

Use your head. You DO NOT want to buy someone else's hacked up project. If it worked well: 1) it would not have a series of hacked up modifications and 2) after all that work chasing the dragon, you would NEVER sell it.

Also, consider the following, price too good to be true, no pic of the GAP stamp, not only is it an internet sale, it is on AR15.com, and finally YOU DO NOT KNOW THE SELLER AND HAVE NO RECOURSE IF HE SCREWS YOU!!!

I am confident that if you buy that turd, you'll have it back up for sale in a couple months, if not weeks.

Sure, the stock is cool, but the remainder of the rifle is questionable at best. Don't let your greed get the best of you.

+1 Looks like project gone wrong. I have NEVER seen a bolt like that! I try to stay away from questionable work..

It does have a GAP stamp on it but no makers stamp forward of the recoil lug . The GAP stamp is not the current cool looking one but looks like it was put on with an old typewriter (not sure how else to explain what font it was) . It also had a number stamped on the bottom edge of the recoil lug . I had the pictures that he sent me saved somewhere but they may have gotten purged by when i gave my wifes laptop back to her .
