Just started my venture into reloading and would like to pick up a chrono to assist in my load development and to have accurate data to start with in my kestrel/ballistic calculators etc. I’d like to spend around the $150 Mark but could be talked into a bit more if it’s justified.

Agreed, the more traditional shooting crony’s are cheaper but what a pita so drag around and set up. The magnetospeed sported will do what you need much easier. Glad I bought one for sure.
Magneto speed. I don’t have one but my local gun Shop let’s me borrow them when ever I need it. Never had an error or failure to read. There was a used one on here for 145
Mangetospeed x5. Bought one. Took it to the range. Opened it. Installed it. In the dark. No instructions. Actually they were 'hidden' behind some foam in the case. Worked so well I thought; "why did I pay so much for this?". Then I remembered, it just worked.

If you shoot at a public range 100% the magneatospeed sporter. Can set it up and fiddle with it without the range having to be cold. If you have your own place and moneys that tight than a pro chrono but you’ll be futzing with it and always have that speck of doubt what the conditions did to influence its readings.
if my range didn't have screens already set up I would be going with the magnetospeed

Used my MS sporter this past weekend for the first time and regret ever wasting money on the shooting chrony. I used it on my 260 rem with a 1" barrel, my AR with a standard 16" barrel, and even a Remington 783 in 270. worked and only had 2 failures but this was my first time shooting over it so im sure I needed to adjust some settings.
Can someone explain what do I get with the MS V3 that is worth another $200 over the sporter?
ALL I want to know is muzzle velocity. While nice to have, I don't even need extreme spread or standard deviation calculated by the chronometer, as I can calculate that at home in a few seconds using excel.

I can mount it on my silencer no worries. Other than that nothing really if your above points don’t matter to you
I don't have any suppressors either. Looks like the Sporter will do more than enough for me.
The sporter will still calculate SD/ES. As mentioned above the V3 is really for being able to use it with suppressors and it has a larger screen than the sporter so most of the info can be displayed at one time instead of having to click through the different screens.
