What do you guys do?

I'm having one of those days where I feel fairly hostile. And I even had a nice 2 hour workout which I thought would help, but it didn't really.

I don't like slapping a fancy-named "disorder" on my personal issues; I beleive that personal responsibility begins with you and no one else.

So, what do you military (and prior military) guys do to rid yourselves of these "feelings"?

Re: What do you guys do?

I take my dog and go drive around, try to find some critters to look at. I have found having a dog helps me a lot. I wanted to get one through the VA but the wait list was really long so I just rescued an Australian Cattle Dog from a puppy mill.

Re: What do you guys do?

Save it for later, when I might need it......

If I need to knock the edge off, a heavy rifle with lots of ammo to beat the hell out of myself and some steel helps.

Sometimes all it takes is logging onto the www, and agravate the hell out of somebody........

Re: What do you guys do?

I posted some links to help individuals with similar issues in the past, let me see if I can dig them up; the best is to use those resources...the ones who have BTDT in your exact situation and worked through their issues is usually the best way to go...confiding in anyone else can complicate things...BTW I would re-word your original link - big brother may be looking for a reason to take away your firearm possession rights...

Hey: Here is a number to call (for anyone from OEF/OIF):

1-866-403-2669. Phones answered 24/7.
God Bless

Re: What do you guys do?

I know for Law Enforcement (at least here in Oregon), there are "people to confide in" that are all First Responders, Police Officers, and people that "have been there". I have not needed that help (yet), but know that it is available should I need it.

In the mean time, I like shooting stuff and golfing (which sometimes makes me want to shoot stuff). I have an idea of what PTSD feels like (I caught myself on fire, caused 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 25% of my body, and have difficulties starting a BBQ now...), but I have not had the days where I felt like letting loose some lead. I do not envy you that.

Having someone to talk to that has been in your shoes and knows what you are going through could help. I don't know what resources you have though...

Hope I helped. And golfing really does work for me.

Re: What do you guys do?

I can't serve, but I do get stressed every now and then. Such as the car trip my family took on Christmas eve. Driving with my sons (1 and 5) and my little brother (13) in the backseat for most of the day was pretty stressful. Back when I was in High School, boxing used to be a great stress reliever. But I have stopped. I figure I don't need anymore hits to the head.

I pretty much now use video games as my stress reliever. Also a few beers works good too getting me in a better mood.

Re: What do you guys do?

Always nice to start the new year off with a good chuckle ... which doesn't include laughing at the idea of a snot-nose trying to compare driving around two toddlers and a teenager with fucking PTSD. Frankly, you owe every person on here who has shot at someone else or been shot at a sincere apology for even walking across their shadows. Oh, and Happy New Year ...

And talk to your doctor. I used to be pissed off at everyone I met until the doc got me on some meds that smoothed everything out.

Veteren's Crisis Line
1-800-273-8255
Press 1

This is a 24/7/365 line staffed by mental health professionals and counselors who work for the VA. Their primary role is for suicidal issues, however, we all know homicidal issues are also self destructive and lead to nothing but more issues and trouble.

This program is all about VETERANS helping VETERANS
We DO NOT FUCK AROUND. WE MEAN BUSINESS. The health of each vet is important and we have enough issues within our community to deal with

To those of you who approach this with jokes and asshattery, piss up a rope, the shit ain't funny.

CONFIDENTIAL CHAT @ VeteranCrisisLine.net

Confidential Phone CAll to 1-800-273-8255, Option 1

I have spoken with a few Vet's on campus that I have classes with who deal with whatever demons they have, and the best thanks I received from them was handing them the little white plastic card this information comes from

Re: What do you guys do?

+1 Switchblade. If someone has any doubts about controlling his anger, he should talk to a professional. Too many service members and vets have taken their own lives thinking they're supposed to shoulder these feelings and memories all on their own. There are so many resources to tap into if you're willing.

I have always found that jokes and asshattery are a far better cure all for homicidal tendencies than playing the serious squirrel. I'll take 5 minutes with my teammates over hours of therapy any day.
