redman has said it best, put that in your writing...
i will say, Mike C is really white, like really...me, not so much, got the dago skin thing going...
where i grew up we would have worried more about being italian vs being white, god damn micks on the other side of the tracks were bastards
White my ass! I'm a cross of pink and red. ;^)
My "whiteness" comes from my mother's Irish side.
She's an actual hillbilly from the mountains of Tennessee.
A real Hatfield for those who know what that means.
Yep, she grew up poor white Irish hillbilly trash.
What does it mean to be white?
When I was younger, it meant absolutely nothing. Then in 4th or 5th grade, our government decided to start a program called busing.
For those unaware of it, they decided to redistribute kids in schools all over Hillsborough county and the rest of the country.
When the new kids came to our school we didn't think much about it. Apparently the new kids didn't like it. There was a lot of name calling, fights, theft and general discourse all over our school. We wondered what the hell had happened.
Thankfully, my parents taught me to accept people for who they are, and not judge them based on skin color.
After a while, a lot of the bad behavior disappeared. We made a lot of friends.
When I became an adult, the division of black, white, yellow, etc seemed to disappear. Life was easy.
I joined the USAF and worked with plenty of people that weren't white. Never did I experience any racial issues in the 21 years I served.
Fast forward 14 years after retirement.
Some how, in the last few years (8 or so)
racial tensions have skyrocketed.
The racism I saw as a kid thrust upon others has now reversed.
Yes, I'm going to say it. As a white male Republican over 50, I have to walk on eggshells with what I say. The millennials treat me like I'm a criminal, like a disease that needs to be eliminated.
The faults of the world apparently rest on my shoulders and the shoulders of my peers.
Throughout my life, I've treated everyone with the same respect. As I get to know a person, they are in charge of whether the respect grows or diminishes.
As a white male I'm sickened by the media.
Sickened by the behavior of certain groups.
Sickened by the rioting in the name race relations.
Sick of being the person all the blame is heaped upon.
Have I been passed over for a job or promotion because of my race?
Absolutely!
I've not gotten jobs because of my gender. At least the boss was straight up about it. He told me "Mike, you're more than qualified. I just like looking at tits".
Can't blame the guy...
There's hope though.
What gives me hope is simple. I live in a very diverse community.
A trip to Publix for groceries can ease the tension. Usually I'll get into a conversation with another shopper and these culturally diverse people have the same concerns, likes and dislikes of what's happening in our country as I do.
It shows me what I've always known.
Blaming others for your own faults, causes unnecessary tension, resentment and gives birth to hatred.
Taking charge of your life and your actions allows one to move forward, not backwards.
Treat others as you wish to be treated and getting along is quite simple.
If everyone did that, being white wouldn't matter.
We could actually live up to the words in the bible where all men are created equal.
And yes, that also includes women in my eyes
