Hunting & Fishing what garmin are you using.

Hunt CO 25 and 26 every year. I have used many various models of Garmin, they have advantages, but even the lower level etrex will grab a signal and get you back to base camp. The touch models are garbage, most other will require you to pay extra for the 24K maps, as they come with the 100k maps loaded.

The model choice will depend on what you intend to do with the unit. If you want to download and create personal maps / use private land chips, get the higher end models with a faster processor. If all you want to do is track your whereabouts then a etrex 30 will do the trick.

As mentioned above, there is no cel signal in many prime hunting areas, so I carry an Inreach SE, It can track my location and send it to someone, or I can text and it will send a hyperlink to that person, who can then look at your location on a map. I do not use the inreach to navigate, but just in case of an emergency.

For navigation, I use my phone and the Gaia gps app, it is darn accurate and you can download topo maps for free. It just uses the sat chips from your phone for location. Sure its as only good as the battery in your phone, but it does not eat the battery too much.

For a dayhunt Ill use the inreach and phone, if I was out on a drop camp hunt, then id also take the etrex as the batteries will last all week.

in nw colo now scouting for first rifle in a week. just started using it, but happy with my samsung android phone and the gaia app. super easy to mark waypoints, see where you've been going and where you need to go to get back. plus a nice big screen (relatively) vs the gps units. if you search on rokslide.com you can find 6mo or year free gaia premium. lets you have overlay maps including gmu numbers, private and public land, topo, streets, etc. have been driving all over my gmu's and easily seeing where public land (and access) is (and unfortunately moreso) isn't.

my old gps died that i was going to use as a backup, so bought the etrex touchscreen (25 i think) and just wasn't intuitive (at least for me) plus a very small screen, so returned it. also bought the etrex 10 and the joystick isn't 100% functional and again just not super intuitive so will be returning this one also. also bought the garmin 64st (yep buying and trying a bunch) and this one is similar to my old one that died. pretty intuitive, useful screens.

ive used the inreach with amazing results. I also have started running the foretrex 701. Both have their strengths and i’ll Likely run both this year to test them against each other. I highly recommend both!
