What gear do you take on a days game hunting

Re: What gear do you take on a days game hunting

Extra food, protein/carb bars
Extra water
Fire Starter/materials
Emergency blanket
500 ft paracord
Several knives
small first aid kit bleed/splint type of stuff, aspirin, 2 ace bandages ibuprofin, tylenol, some multivitamins
extra batteries
Surefire flashlight
Small GRMS radio
Cell phone
dry underlayer, socks
glove liners, extra watchcap
chapstick

I need to decide on a water purification pump like a Katadin or the like. That's all I can picture at the moment. If I were going out West into the mountains, I'd have a larger pack and have more at base camp.

Re: What gear do you take on a days game hunting

Gun
Ammo
Knife
Paracord (about 50')
Lighter
Water
Snack (bar or something)
Flashlight
Really simple first aid kit
Wipies

In the truck I have a cooler, trash bags, an old tarp, rope, hatchet, and a bunch of other stuff.

Re: What gear do you take on a days game hunting

gun
ammo in bag + extra ammo in the truck
two knives
LRF + mildot master
GPS and extra batteries
paper map of area in case GPS fails
regular old compass
first aid kit with bloodclotter
skinning knife
up-to-shoulder surgical gloves
regular surgical gloves
camo with scentlock
scentlock deodorant
energy bars + some candy
water and propel (electrolytes are fun!)
headlamp - flashlights suck
extra batteries and bulb for headlamp
para cord, 100+ feet
if in cliff territory, 50M of 8mm rope and knowledge to use it for rapping
extra wool socks
gloves - fingerless
gloves - warm waterproof ones if in winter
goggles in snow storm is predicted
sunglasses
extra gloves - windstopper
extra hat - windstopper
extra light/mid layer polypro shirt
magnesium fire starter
two bic lighters
iodine tablets - filters are too heavy
scope pen thing to clean scope
small gun cleaning kit - muzzle full of snow/mud sucks

you'll notice some of those extra items are for when/if you get wet. hypothermia in the sierra or rockies is not a good thing to have. I used to do a lot of mountaineering and ice climbing and those always came in handy.

Re: What gear do you take on a days game hunting

Just a day hunt without staying over night and not in really cold environment.
Toilet paper
100 OZ water in backpack hydration unit
lunch
2 apples
1 light weight fixed blade hunting knife with sharpener
some granola bars or equivalent energy bars
1 good quality lighter and some firestarting matches (professional quality) not the cheap imitation matches
A good pistol / sidearm. For hunting I like a 44 magnum Ruger Super Blackhawk (Bisley frame and grip)in 7 1/2" barrel. This is a very lightweight weapon but still has 200 meter / yard capability if you practice, but it is awesome at 100 meter / yards or less. And carry some extra bullets but not too many and get weighed down, you are not going to war.
A rifle or shotgun for that particular hunt if the 44 mag won't suffice and let it be light if you are going to pack hunt.
A good LED flashlight like Surefire or Streamlight. My favorite light for hunting now is Surefires new Saint headlamp. It's very lightweight, very comfortable to wear, battery last a very long time, it has SOS feature, it's not cheaply built, it's output is like 110 lumen if I am remembering right and it's distance is awesome.
Hope this helps for ideas...............SmokeRolls

multivitamins? Where the hell are you hunting that you're worried about developing scurvy before you get back home?

Re: What gear do you take on a days game hunting

Deer hunting, so I don't shoot a lot, and it is in Florida so there are no hills.

Rifle
A few rounds extra ammo
Rangefinder
2 knives
mini mag lite
peanuts
compass
GPS sometimes
Machete if appropriate
Diaper Wipes
fire starter
Cigars (usually Rocky Patel)
Lighter
a few bottles of water
a few cans of Diet Coke
Duct Tape

Diaper wipes and duct tape are a pretty good way to stop bleeding, I've used it on some pretty bad cuts.
The diaper wipes don't stick to the wound.

I had a hemorrhoid once and the diaper wipes and duct tape were of no use whatsoever.

Plus all you need to do is chew on some fur or spruce needles to prevent scurvy anyways.

Re: What gear do you take on a days game hunting

Everybody has it about covered. I would add something to bring your game back in. If it is big game I bring two elk bags that fold up to take up no much more the 5 inches of space. I also bring a knife sharpener, especially if I am hunting elk or moose. There are some very compact sharpners about the size of a lighter.

Re: What gear do you take on a days game hunting

surefire led
extra CR123As

lifgter

.40 cal and extra clip
fully charged phone

Re: What gear do you take on a days game hunting

The question was on a day hunting trip, not a week. What are you going to do with all the stuff your toting? Blaster7 has the idea, just add baby wipes (nothing like a clean butt) and a pack of Marlboro lights.

All my junk compacts nicely and some of gets worn especially when evening hunting cause the temp drops. I usually drink all the water and have eaten all my food before the day ends. A sider arm is my choice when tracking, easier to point tith a 4" barrell than my 26" rem. And holstered I have both my hands with easey access to my pistol.

Re: What gear do you take on a days game hunting

Last years bow hunt went something like this. (no joke)
Got up, made coffee, drank coffee, put on coat over pajamas and slipers, picked up bow, opened back door, shot doe @ 27yds, closed door took off coat, ate breakfast, got dresses, walked out to barn and fired up ATV, drug deer round to chain hoist, strung her up and dressed it, went back into house to watch morning news..

No cord,first aid kit,gps needed..

Sorry...lol

Re: What gear do you take on a days game hunting

Most of my more recent day hunts have involved weather starting out below freezing (sometimes down into the teens) and warming up into the 50s or better during the day. For that reason, I do tend to carry a larger bag than necessary to hold my items, since I'll shed clothing and stuff it in the bag as the day warms up, then put some of it back on later.

In my bag:

skinning knife
550 cord
flashlight
butt pad (for sitting on)
masking tape
bug spray
face mask
gloves (cold weather and latex)
first aid kit
poncho
chemlight
binos
camera
1 or 2 pieces of fruit

There's more in there, but I can't think of anything else right now.

I sure hope you meant "fir". I've got no problem with fur, but I doubt it does much to prevent scurvy!

Bullet Sponge: Workin' smarter, not harder. There's no need for all the "to do" if you don't need to.

my uncle sent me an email last week that went something like that. him and my other uncle were at a buddies house hanging out. after about an hour the buddy says "hey, i got some deer in the backyard, wanna shoot one?" my one uncle was too busy enjoying his beer but the other got his remington out of his truck and shot a great doe.

Re: What gear do you take on a days game hunting

From a previous post about the same type of thing:

Hunting out of elk camp - day trips.

No backpack - too bulky, must be able to sprint in timber. I use a fanny pack with the necessities:

<ul style="list-style-type: disc">[*]rifle - check[*]knife - check[*]license - check[*]confirm 3 rounds in rifle - check[*]6 ft of para cord - check[*]20oz water - check[*]small flashlight / function ck - check[*]Bung fodder (toilet paper and more importantly baby wipes!!!) - check[*]Cycle one round in the tube, rifle on safe - check[*]Move out.[/list]

Why would you have to sprint in the timber? Running after those elk?

My list:

3-5 layers of clothes depending on the weather
boots
benie
camo hat
orange hat
one of those middle eastern head wrap things (good for keeping wind off of your face)
1-2 knives
Surefire
Rifle
Canteen with water
Mabey some food
3 pairs of gloves
