Hunting & Fishing What HUNTING scope for M77 Ruger 308 ?

Friend wants to upgrade his fixed 6X to something better. WTH do I know about "hunting" scopes & don't even try to convince this tight fisted guy to jump for a NF. Since I haven't paid any attention to "hunting scopes" in better than 15 years ... What do you suggest ?
1) under $300
2) $300>500
3) Above $500
Please justify choices.

We are gonna need more info than just what gun he has. What does he hunt, where, caliber, skill level ect.?

Brain fart ... Hunts in east-central AL. Rifle is a Ruger(20 yrs old) with a 22" Douglas select(?) barrel (not quite target but heavier than a standard hunting barrel), Marine-Tex pillared & bedded. He's wanting to be able to cover to green fields from one location. HE Says max range is 650 yds. Currently has a leupold fixed 6X.He would prefer to keep cost around $300.
I was think maybe a Burris or Nikon ?

I guess it depends on what kind of shooter he is, but I'd say the SS either the 10X or the 3-9. I have also had good luck with the Nikons. Had me one of the older 4-14 buckmasters I wish I'd never sold. But the current buckmasters look like turds, I'd go with a monarch if you go Nikon. Or you could go with one of the Vortex Vipers or crossfires. really there is alot of good options I think in the 200-500 range.

About the way I feel toward the current crop of leupolds !! I'll pass on the info about monarch ... he's a good shooter. hell I taught some of what he knows but ... i don't hunt ever since the hurricane of "whatever year' sent my stuff down the SWAMP !!!
