What In The World

My first thought, too. Will be interesting to see the answer. Destroyer's CO was injured in the collision, but I'm betting he's in better shape than his career.

that Philippine vessel was a big one & over 700+ ft. freighter, Born date of 2008 . but you never know who that ( owner ) parent Co. is that has there fleet flagged/Licensed in Philippines . Or who or nationality of the subcontracted that they hired for Master, officers and crew that is involved . and it almost 10 years old at sea, so you don't know condition the vessel is kept at .
internet say's ( MV ACX Crystal ) is Japan owned, Panama managed and Flagged in Philippines .
. You can bet both ships capt. and crew are being lined-up for depositions and both vessels Capt. & officers will be getting stomach ulcers in a few months . forsure will not be formal release of a decision of guilt for many months . be interesting to see if usn releases/leaks any details in upcoming weeks to media articles .
.

My question is why didn't our destroyer pick up an incoming ship. I would think that there are men on the screens 24/7

-
We can all ask that and were not going to get an answer .. the powers that be are crawling up everyone's ass on both vessels, and only people who know why they were FuckingUp are the people who were there on duty at the time . and nobody is going to talk about it publicly post collision .

But that is the big question . Why everyone on-duty on both vessels knew nothing about anything going on minutes before the collision .
So... ( I will guess at it ) and say odds are strong it is Guilt of 'both vessels' . of 'negligence, failing to do there duty ' by laziness and Complacency .

Radar wasn't working....

There was nothing stealth about that ship....

But it is an incredibly cluttered and busy shipping lane....

Lots of explaining to do... hope they find the sailors, but since none of them were in life-vests and may even have been asleep in quarters when they were hit and swept over, I fear the worst. Bad bad day.

In greatest hope we'll recover them!

Hell I would be out fishing at night in my open fisherman and have my radar set for a perimeter and get dings a mile out. Maybe they need to look into some radar units for fishing boats.

Why is everyone asking how did the destroyer not pick the freighter up on radar? Look out the fucking window you can't miss the damn thing. With the technology on our naval vessels it goes to show no matter how advanced and idiot proof you make things there will come a day when a more advanced idiot comes along to mess things up.

That's what I want to know.... and maybe an ex Navy guy like 1J04 can explain whether the practice of port-side and starboard-side watches still occur? I mean... guys with binoculars who are supposed to be... watching?

I probably have all my terminology wrong... But between all the people who are supposed to be (to use my language) situationally aware... where was everyone? I understand the captain needs rack time. Where was the XO? Who was Officer of the Deck? Where was the radar officer? Communications officer? The Chiefs (who really run the ship)? In super crowded waters, do they use pilots or have extra navigation folks?

Lots of explaining to do... but I'm with bullseye. Where was the guy with the binoculars and/or NVG's and/or Mk1 Mod0 eyeball.... watching the horizon?

Inquiring minds want to know...

They were all huffing glue in the mess.

Our tax dollars at work.

Vlad smirks.

I hate to say it but when I first heard the story, my reaction is that "This is what happens when the entire crew spends its time in sensitivity training, LGBT awareness training, Tailhook Remedial training, Progressive Ideology Training, Racial Harmony training, Safe Space Identification on Ship Training, How to not offend the Trans-gendered-Crew Training....... Instead of "How to drive boats, shoot guns, fly planes and storm beaches training."

The past 8 years have gutted the military. And from what I gather, it's going to take years to purge that rot out of the Pentagon and the officer corps. Because if you wanted to hold sensitivity training... you got promoted. If you wanted to go train your soldiers to shoot guns... you got retired.

The PC that has infested the officer corps... is going to get young Americans killed. Maybe, off Japan, it just did.

Pardon my rant. I want to think better than that of our DoD. And if anyone can fix it, Mattis can. But there are issues that have to be dealt with at a fundamental level... which is that if you are in the military, you learn your job first, sensitivity second. If at all. Training to kill enemies isn't for the touchy feely crowd... as much as they want to be 'included.' Especially when they can wear sailor suits and sing "YMCA."

Oh Mercy. I was sitting here shaking my head in full agreement with everything that you said and then you put that hook on the end of the paragraph and I bellowed. My wife said whats going on down there??? Nothing Dear

I cant wait to here about survivers of the missing 7 not too hopefull though, looks bad.
The crapass shit hauling cargo boats radar may have missed our ship due to radar mitigation efforts on our part.
But i cannot for an instant belive our radar missed seeing them.
What is it a 6 foot tall man can see 18 miles at sea level.
I worked on usaf fighters the radar could see 80 nmi?
How can this happen?

The missing sailors have been found, unfortunately all lost in a flooded berthing area. I feel truly sad for them in their final minutes and their families in the coming days and years.

As for the reasoning, this doesn't happen without serious malfunctions and failures, but the track of the freighter is non-typical for inside a shipping lane close to shore and I'm betting this is more fault on the freighter than the DDG. I'll wait for the hot wash to go public before passing any judgement on this though.

I'm surprised no one asked wether the freighter pilot/ Captain voiced his politics via the front of a freighter . Maybe a Muslim , Chinese or NK sympathizer or agent . If the case we may see more of this .

I don't think so. If you wanted to intentionally ram a destroyer with a 700 ft. freighter, there's no way the destroyer couldn't out-maneuver it if they were even half paying attention.

Been outta that game since 1990 my friend, but yes, we still had sponson watches port n starboard, fore n aft. Pretty certain they still do. There's no excuse whatsoever for this shit, but it continues to still happen. And no, it's not a career enhancing move for either skipper. Unrep's, Vertrep's, Flight Ops, Compex's, basic navigation, yada yada. Oh and weapons onload/offload all going bad. Amazing. We've had more shit happen between our ships and Japanese MSDF and civilian shipping off of Japan and right outta Yokosuka than we need, believe that. Relations are always strained between our Forces just being there, let alone when shit goes bad. Oh ya, then some fucking squid or jarhead decides to rape and kill a Japanese National. Great. Why doesn't the Air Farce ever get any bad press? Homo's.
Playing Bumper Boats in the Strait of Malacca is damn near a right of passage, as well as swinging on the hook in Singapore. We had part of our Terrier system tore off in Singapore minding our own business before the Sea Sparrow change out. Who the hell runs into an Aircraft Carrier? Amazing. Anyhow, lots of reasons this shit still happens, none of it good or excusable. Hate hearing of these senseless and horrible deaths. RIP Brothers. Horrific way to go.

So simple, even a Carrier can do it. These full power runs and turns are exciting and scary as hell all at once. You will soon find out what was and wasn't secured properly. Awesome stuff.
