What is Hornady .308Win 165GR GMX TAP Heavy Barrier ammo? Is it AP or Marketing Hype?

Anybody can buy the GMX bullet off the shelf. All it is is a lead free (copper) bullet just like those from Barnes, Nosler, etc. and required in some states for hunting. The lead free monolithics just happen to work well for barrier penetration and Hornady and BlackHills both offer a variety of loads with the GMX and a few of the Barnes offerings and are marketed for LE use.

Law Enforcement and Ammo Restriction: Hornady Law Enforcement Ammo (TAP/Critical Duty) is restricted to Law Enforcement agency/officer sales only.

LOL, I can buy Hornady Critical Duty handgun ammo in my local gun store right off the shelf and it's what I load my 9 mm pistols with.

I can buy their GMX rifle bullets off the shelf and make my own "LAW ENFORCEMENT RESTRICTED" ammo...…….

I can also buy Hornady 308 Winchester hunting ammo loaded with the same exact fucking 165 GMX bullet, including their Superformance ammo that runs 100 fps faster than the super duper police load.

99.9% of the time the "law enforcement only" ammo is marketing bullshit. There's always an equivalent or superior product available to any joe blow. That "LE only" crap excites the tards over at pistol-forum, m4carbine, lightfighter, primary & secondary, and such other tacticool idiot fests.

Hi,

Well basically it is like most things...can be traced back to taxes.

IF they sell the loaded ammunition to the "Public" they have to be the excise tax as the manufacturer, as to where restricting to .gov use only; it is same as exporting it and excise tax exempt.
Selling the components in which they know the "Public" will load into ammunition removes them from paying the Ammunition excise tax.

Sincerely,
Theis

While you're correct about excise taxes, why couldn't Hornady (or anyone else) offer the same exact ammo name/packaging with a two tiered pricing structure: one for retail customers and one for police agency sales?

Hi,

Shhhh..that would cut into profits :)
They can charge the .gov buyers full price as if excise tax is being paid but just pocket that money. IF they tiered it then they would be forced then to raise the retail price up x percent or lower .gov x percent to show the difference in tax cost.

True, true. I like it the way it is.

The LE label on the ammo means nothing as far as performance goes.

I always appreciated the Winny Ranger SXT was about the cheapest JHP I could buy AND came in 50 rd boxes. There’s lots of .gov marked stuff out there that doesn’t impress though, at any price.
You can buy Ranger T the cheapest from Armsunlimited.com
Get on their email list if it isn't in stock as it goes quick
