What is that nylon fore end protector?

I've seen some guy in competition videos with some sort of nylon protector strapped to the bottom of their fore ends. It looks like straps go up over the top of the barrel. Looks to be used for shooting off of objects, so as not to mar the stock's finish.

What is it?

Used to be the Sotech sniper skidplate, now it's made by someone else - Google sniper skid plate and it should pop up. Triad Tactical has them, I know.

I don't think finish was the main purpose in mind. it would give you grip to steady your shot. benefit it wont screw up your picatinny rail or finish.
