What all are you wanting to do?? What features do you wish to have?? What sort of reticle do you prefer?? There are WAY too many questions that need to be answered, prior to getting any sort of good information...

i picked up a new Leupold 8.5-25x50 LR/T M1 TMR reticle scope for $1100 and it is a great scope. Sounds like thats what you want, but its all personal preference. The main points of buying a scope would be SFP or FFP, magnification, reticle, and mil/mil or moa/moa turrets/reticle. Once you can decide on those factors, its narrows down your options significantly. For a hunting rifle, I would either look at the 6.5-20 Leupold (8.5x might be little much on the low end), a SWFA 5-20 SS, or the Vortex PST 6-24. You might also look at a used Nightforce 5-15x here on the Hide.

Best place to purchase a used Nightforce? Right here on the Hide - just keep checking the optics section, they show up fairly regularly.

Think my glass holds up pretty good to my buddies nightforce and has zero stop 10 mil turrets digital illumination and ffp. Can't say how it compares to the hdmr which has caught my eye lately. Would like to hear how it compares to an ior if anybody has compared them.

What do you call long range?
If is 1k and 18" steel you don't need that much magnification.
Good glass an 14-15x is plenty.
8x sure seems high on the bottom end for hunting.

Bushnell HDMR 3.5-21 or a SWFA SS 5-20 HD. If you can save an extra $200 get a Vortex Razor HD

I have S&B and NF scopes and the Bushnell HDMR works just as well for me so another vote for the Bushy.
