What is the USPS? Government or Corporate?

I've tried to research it, but I get different answers depending on where I go. On one hand I read its an "Independent Agency of the United States government" but when in the Post Office with the Post Master I'm told by the Post Master himself they are "Corporate Owned" and not an entity of the United States government anymore, so they do not answer to the public or the governement. My immediate response is "Why is there a sign outside then stating "US Government Property" if you're Corporate owned?"... He said it was an old sign.

From Wikepedia..

"The USPS is often mistaken for a government-owned corporation (e.g., Amtrak) because it operates much like a business, but as noted above, it is legally defined as an "independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States", (39 U.S.C. § 201) as it is controlled by Presidential appointees and the Postmaster General. As a quasi-governmental agency, it has many special privileges, including sovereign immunity, eminent domain powers, powers to negotiate postal treaties with foreign nations, and an exclusive legal right to deliver first-class and third-class mail. Indeed, in 2004, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a unanimous decision that the USPS was not a government-owned corporation, and therefore could not be sued under the Sherman Antitrust Act.[35] The U.S. Supreme Court has also upheld the USPS's statutory monopoly on access to letter boxes against a First Amendment freedom of speech challenge; it thus remains illegal in the U.S. for anyone, other than the employees and agents of the USPS, to deliver mailpieces to letter boxes marked "U.S. Mail."[36]"

Re: What is the USPS? Government or Corporate?

The Post Office is a Government Sponsored Enterprise, much like Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

So yes, it is like a corporation, but it is also influenced by the US Government.

Don't get me started on what I think about their services...
Lets just say, if it's possible, I use UPS. I've had too many instances where work related mail has been delivered to the wrong box, signed for by the wrong business and for some reason, they are not responsible for it. I actually had of their sheeple ask me why I was upset that they delivered my shipment to the wrong office, with the wrong signature accepting delivery. How do you argue with logic like this?

Re: What is the USPS? Government or Corporate?

Another underlying issue here is some of us have been told that we're not allowed to carry even concealed within the local Post Office as it is "Government Property". Most of us ignore it anyways as there is nothing on the door indicating weapons are prohibited. So is it illegal to carry in the post office? We also have been having to deal with protestors outside the local branch constantly berating us with the anti-war crap. When I complained that as a customer in what's allegedly a "Corporate" owned entity I shouldn't have to get accosted going to my box they said it's still technically US Property and public domain so they can protest all they want...

Re: What is the USPS? Government or Corporate?

I think this is an issue where they pick which entity they are based on the situation. I have tried to get answers regarding concealed carry in a post office but couldn't find accurate or reliable information.

I carry pretty everywhere because the minute I'm not, is when I will wish I was.

That being said, I don't go the Post Office. For work my Administrator takes care of it.

There should be a sign on a bulletin board at EVERY postal facility stating that firearms are not allowed, even those that are not open to the public.

This is absolutely correct!

No ambiguity at all. Like any government office, school, the post office prohibits weapons of any kind in the building.

Leave them in the car or truck and you should be fine though technically, Eric Holder would just as soon crucify a person for having weapons in the parked vehicles as on their person, inside the facility.

Fuck Eric HOldder, but big kudos for the USPS. Where else can you get a package delivered from Los Angeles to Virginia, in two days for $5.35?
