what is visitor Messages ?

I receive a 'notification' . for. 'visitor message' from member that is up on top of the forum page .
but the ( visitor message ) I receive, it is 'can not' be seen in my Inbox on my Message 'PM's'
I also type a Reply to the visitor message notification . and my reply sent to notification is not in my 'Sent' messages on my PM's .

Is this some type of completely separate Com. on this Site or a ' Chat ' ? . because it looks on my end to be not connected to the standard PM /personal message .

I'm curious as well, had someone "visitor message" me, I deleted the notification out of my Message Center, and the entire conversation disappeared. Any help would be taken gratefully..
