What options to re-barrel a CZ 455 / 457 action?

I'm aware of Lilja's quality product.

But wanted to consider all options.

Looking for 20" threaded barrel. To be Cerakoted in FDE. (along with action) and put in a KRG chassis.

Suggestions?

I will pay whatever the "best" costs. Problem is I don't think Lilja will thread the 20" bbl. They didn't used to. Will be calling them shortly.

It isn't pinned in. Two threaded set screws are used for barrel retention.

Far as Lilja's quality....I know its gonna expose my weaknesses as a shooter.

That is correct. Some guys are gluing them in place, but tbh I think the grub screws do the job just fine. I believe they offer any length shorter than 23" finish.

You can also get a 22rf blank from just about anyone that makes one and then have a smith spin up a custom barrel for you. just depends on how much money you have to burn and how much you are willing to wait it out

lastly would be to wait and see if we get another crack at a keystone accuracy group buy later on in the fall but there are no guarantees that happens again

@padom seems to have his finger on the pulse of the aftermarket CZ barrels. he's tested most of them.

Far as why CZ? (1) I've got the action already (2) I like planning and executing a build that will be exactly what I want (3) Significant total cost savings. Vudoo with MPA BA starts at $2,800. I'll be under $2K total (4) Why not? (5) From what I've seen, the Vudoo won't do that much better, accuracy wise.

To me, the only advantage a Vudoo has is the trigger. Basing it off a Remington Clone, you are able to utilize all the aftermarket triggers.

The new CZ's seem to have a "decent" trigger, is it comparable to a jewell, timney, bix, etc. No of course not. But for the price, yes it will work.

This sort of thing is very personal. Your points are valid and a while back I was doing the same thing. I bought a 455 before vudoo came out. "Invested", if you can call it that, about $1200-1300 into it, including a bedding job and all the usual stuff, base, nice bore guide, etc. When it came down to doing a barrel, I could have done the keystone for about $500 more plus shipping. But then at 1800 into the gun, I saw no reasonable way out if I ever wanted to sell it. DJ built guns aren't fetching that kind of money. For 1900, I could have bought one of the nicer DJ built guns, but couldn't do it as it has sat there waiting to be bought for a long time at 1900. Finally talked myself into a V22. Sure, I spent more on it then I would have if I dumped another 500 for a keystone barrel and 200 for a Bscar trigger. But, I didn't want keep throwing money at the CZ. Sadly, I think if the V22 was out when I bought my CZ, I still would have bought to the CZ, I was in the camp that it's crazy to pay that kind of money for a 22. Got my V22 and the first 5 rounds out of it were touching and the group was about 0.5" edge to edge at 50 yards. This was the first time I pulled the trigger on the gun. I didn't have to fart around with testing the torque settings, the barrel grub screw setting, etc. Mounted my scope and I was shooting amazing groups.

I'm of the mindset that all I need is one 22 rifle. But if I wanted to collect 22 rifles, I wouldn't hesitate to do the keystone on my CZ and the trigger upgrade knowing that I would never be able to get a decent return on it if I sold it. I may still do that if my wife decides she wants to shoot rifles.

Good luck with your rifle...sounds like it will be a great shooter. Are you having Lija glue your barrel in and eliminate the screws?

Yes. The decisioning process is not purely mathematical.

The builders say you can deform the chamber with set screws. And they could get loose down the road, etc. I think if you are going through the trouble of having Lilja custom fit a barrel to your action, consider gluing it in. I don't have personal experience, but in talking to others that know far more than I do, they have found there to be improvements in accuracy and consistency. Fewer flyers, etc.

Keep in mind, the idea behind the shim set is that you can adjust your headspace based on what ammo you are shooting. Gluing the barrel in limits you to that, I would just use the grub screws.

I am doing some testing with Bartlein right now with there semi-custom and a full custom CZ barrel. I am about to post results on their semi-custom barrel. 0.900" straight blank any length you want really. They use the Benz chamber, tighter than factory barrel tenon OD (not full custom fit but much tighter than factory). What I've found testing this barrel over the last 2 months is it doesnt shoot the cheap stuff as consistently or accurately as the full customs to my specs from Keystone but they HAMMER consistently with R50. Over and over.

I sent my custom 22lr reamer (made exactly to Don's specs he gave me) along with my 455 action to Frank and hes doing a full custom barrel this time, tenon custom fit to my action, 0.900" straight blank, 20", muzzle threaded 1/2-28", and headspace set to my requested 0.041".... I will do a full comparison of both Bartleins semi-custom drop in and there full custom option.

Sorry but I just didnt have luck with the Lilja, even with adjusting headspace with shims.. It didnt come close to the Keystone GM custom barrels or the Bartleins. Id be interested to do a test barrel with a Lilja blank using my reamer and specs custom fit to my action but I personally wouldnt waste my money on their grub screw, semi-custom, shimmed drops ins if ultimate accuracy was my goal to be on par with a Vudoo... Just my $0.02

After testing them all, if I wanted the most accurate barrel available for purchase today outside special runs/group buys, I would be buying a Bartlein. And I must be half accurate on that statement because last I talked to Frank back in the beginning of June about these 22lr CZ barrels he had a batch going through the shop of 41pcs and they were all sold. He had a second batch behind it of 30pcs as well. Not sure on the sold vs available is as of today on that second batch of 30pcs..

Ok, I agree with you on some points. Sure, if you had 10,000 rounds of all the same lot and knew what headspace it needed to be, I'd absolutely glue mine in.

But, if we are kind of discussing apples and oranges here. Using the word custom fit, and CZ455 in the same sentence just doesn't work. That's why Lilja had to go to the shim kit to begin with, CZ can't hold there tolerances tight enough. My bolt face depth might measure 1.235", while joe blow's action measures 1.238". That's .003 difference. How can anyone expect to make a drop-in barrel for an action that varies .003 (or more) and expect it to shoot accurately? Especially when Rimfire ammo is so finicky on headspace. The best option for that, which Lilja nailed, is the shim kits. Does it make it a true custom fit? No of course not. You still have tennon diameter to worry about, and again, tolerances...

If you wanted to go true custom with a CZ, your best option would be to thread the receiver and do a custom fit threaded barrel. I'm sorry, but just sending your receiver to bartlien and having them spin you up a "custom" barrel doesn't make it custom. Unless they thread your receiver, it's just another drop-in barrel with a "tight" tenon. I guarantee if you called Lilja they would do the exact same thing.

Are you running it suppressed? I've got a 21" barrel on my 457, but it's not suppressed. If I was going to run one suppressed, I wouldn't go longer 17" or so. 20+ inches plus a 6" suppresser is a lot hanging off a CZ action, and yes most powder burn is done around 16-17 inches.

You say custom doesnt work in a sentence with CZ 455 then go on to define the EXACT reason why we have CUSTOM barrels made for your CZ 455/457's for extreme accuracy.

No, Lilja barrels ARE NOT custom barrels, they are semi-custom/drop ins made to a tolerance that work on the wide range of CZ 455 tolerances and from my notes and working with many of the named CZ 455 barrel suppliers in this thread range in tenon size from 0.704 - 0.711. Ive even seen some as big as 0.713 and that is over a LARGE sample size.

The group buy I ran was "CUSTOM FIT" barrels to EACH PERSONS CZ 455/457 action. No one barrel was the same as the last. Each barrels tenon was custom cut to a diameter just shy of press fit for a wobble free fit in the receiver. Each persons barrel tenon length was custom cut to headspace to 0.041" in THEIR action. That means a different tenon length for each barrel.

If thats not the definition of CUSTOM I dont know what is. Slow your roll there big guy.

One thing to keep in mind is just because someone has a "loud" opinion doesn't mean it's the correct one. Everyone these days online is a keyboard warrior, so it's great to get different opinions. I think padom can agree that nothing he or I said was incorrect.

So, you go call Keystone, ask if you get a group buy together can you get a barrel? You have some balls.

Actually, incorrect. As a CPA , I understand the concept of economies of scale... Of course he wouldn't be intrested in running just one barrel.. . it would take a whole group buy.

Do I want to run a group buy or horn in on whatever little contract you have ?
