I do a lot of solo hiking, hunting, and biking. For peace of mind and safety I carry a spot X currently, and have not had issues, but would maybe like to upgrade. What services are available, and what services are folks using? I only know about the DeLorme In Reach and Findmespot. I think there is at least one more system available.
I need the ability to ping location at least every 5-10 min, send help messages and to send OK messages. THANKS!!!

I use the inReach mini for hunting. Works great with BT to my phone. Only issue I have is late season and it is with the touch screen of my phone and not the inReach when the temps drop too low. Otherwise is a nice, compact device that works well.

I tried Sat Phones. You have to go outside, walk around for the perfect spot to get it to work, then you get cut off.

I now use the inReach. It works great. They say you have to be outside. I havent found that to be the case. I use it in the tent, in the truck, and even in buildings. My wife loves it. Every time I text, she gets my location.

She's not fond of my hunting the mountains alone, but the inReach keeps her happy. I dont have to drive off the mountain to let her know I'm still kicking.

I havent had any problems with cold weather on my phone. But then I keep it inside my coat. I keep the inReach attached to my belt loops, so its out of the cold also.

When I'm not hunting I keep it in my truck or have the wife take it if I'm not with her. I live in an area where if you are out of town, you dont have cell service. If she drives into a snow bank the Inreach allows her to contact me without having to take off looking for a ranch with a land line.

I like the weather you can get with the Inreach also.

Heck of a lot cheaper then the Sat Phone, but it works.
