What range can i shoot 1/4” AR500 steel?

I’ve shot 3/8” AR500 at 300ish with both of those calibers with no damage. But, I run heavy for caliber bullets in both so the speed is a bit lower. Speed kills steel. Others hopefully will chime in.

The mounting system makes a big difference also. I have a 12" plate that hangs from two chains allowing it to swing (absorbs/deflects the majority of the energy) and a torso shaped target mounted with a bracket on top of a 2x4 with a stand.

I've shot mine at 100 yards with up to a 300 wm (220 smk @ 2870) and it doesnt even dent the swinger. It poked a clean hole through the fixed torso.

I think how it is mounted has a large effect as well. If it is fairly rigid i think it will not hold up as well as a swinging plate.

I have a 1/4 inch plate i shot at 400yds with 243 and 105 grain. It didn't leave a mark at that range. I mostly use that plate for pistol so not sure how it would do over time.

You can go 50 with 193, 855 may want to stretch it some otherwise minor pock marks. .308, 100 is fine. I would also make it a swinging plate otherwise a static one with welds will break in time. Plus on a swinger, if it's not fresh paint, you can easily tell left or right hits as it will twist in that direction when hit.

I have a 1/4" 33% IPSC popper target. At 200 yards, 6.5 and 308 will cup it in short order, though no divots/dings. I think you'd want to be 400-500 to avoid bending it, but minor bending doesn't seem to be a big deal.

Jake what about heavier hitters, 300 WM 7mm RM, 1K and further with 1/4" steel to get the most life out of it? I have bowed 3/8 " targets over time used in the 4-600 yard range with x47'd and occasionally something heavier.

Yep I recommend 900-1000 on heavy hitters.
All my match steel past 800 is 1/4” AR500. It gets hit quite a lot and keeps on going!
