Re: What scopes have good clarity at max mag?

If anyone wants to know, I don't own a gun yet. I sometimes go out to the range with my dad and we practice shooting targets. He has a few rifles and likes his Remington 700 and Leupold 4x-12x. The range is up to 300 yds but we usually only shoot from 50 up to 200.
I've been thinking of finally getting my own rifle to bring to the range. Since I'm starting out, I don't have the money to spend or have the need for a $2000 rifle and a $2000 scope. But reading various forums, I know enough not to skimp too much and get something good that is suited to my needs, which is to have fun at the range. I'm thinking about getting a 30-06 which is what he has but not sure about the brand. I'll probably end up getting a Remington, too. I figured it wouldn't be out of line to pay $500-600 for a scope, the same amount as the rifle, but it seemed there are better ones if I went up to $1000. I would still prefer $500-600 though.
I think his Leupold isn't very crisp on details at 100 yds on 12x. It's not blurry, I guess a better word would be grainy at the highest zoom. It's fine enough for shooting but not for spotting. It's easy to see bullet holes in the white part of the target but hard to see any in the black part. We would have to use his spotting scope, which was cheap but does it's job.
If I get my own rifle, I might go out to the range myself on some days. I thought that a good scope with good clarity at long range might be better than having to buy a seperate spotting scope. Sort of a combination and it will save me $100.
Hope that clears up what I'm looking for.

Alright so your 15, and your worried about privacy so you don't want to put in a location? Just do it and be honest.
Green text: If your shooting at paper you have pretty much two choices to see where you hit on the black. Shoot N See target's, or a decent spotting scope. At your price point a rifle scope is not a substitute for a spotting scope. You could always wait for the range to go cold and walk out to your targets.
As far as spending equal amounts of money on your rifle and scope. There are 600 dollar rifle's that can shoot 1/2MOA. There are 600 Scopes that can allow it to happen. However, think of a rifle like a car you can always upgrade it. You can't upgrade a scope. So get the best scope that you can afford and since your starting out do yourself a favor and just make sure that the reticle and turrets match. If the scope you think you want doesn't have that feature then get a different scope. It's already been said but the SS5-20 is probably your best bet right now.
