I need to mount a Viper barrel vise to a workbench. What diameter bolts are you using to mount the vise? Holes don't look quite 1/2" in dia.

Also, what are folks using for torque specs when clamping the barrel in the vice? Will 45 ft.-lbs. be sufficient if torquing a barrel down to 70 ft-lbs. or will it slip? This is for installing a shouldered barrel into a new Origin.

I don't know what size bolts I used, but I don't measure the torque when clamping the barrel. When you snug up on the bolts you will know when it's tight. It's a high amount of force clamping down. I do use some brass shim stock just to ensure nothing gets scratched.

Consider using stand offs to allow use from either side.

I also use C clamps and put the vise away when not in use.

That vise will grip the shit out of a barrel. Popping a factory rem 700 loose I turned torque wrench up 50 ftlb at a time to see what it would need. 250ft lb later the wrench was clicking and the action did not come loose so on to the big breaker bar it went and came free somewhere north of 250. This is just using a small wrench to tighten the clamping nuts.

If you tighten the 4 bolts to 45 I am certain you won't and any issue torquing the barrel on at 70. You probably only need about half that to clamp the barrel in for 70.
