As an NRA certified rifle instructor, I'm frustrated by the abomination of something that gets under my skin almost daily, that is: the correct pronunciation of "Garand". If I'm not mistaken, it should be properly pronounced "'Gerund", similar to "errand" and not "Ga'RAND". However, I don't think I've ever heard the proper pronunciation used anywhere, whether it be at the local gun store or Camp Perry. Let's all make an effort to correct this travesty of speech and honor John C. Garand in a manner befitting his family name!
Please join me in an effort to get everyone in the same boat.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr its not tomato its pronounced "tomato"

sorry brother, tv - and every one i know and have ever known says it that way might be time to give that one up

Re: What the heck do YOU call it?

It appears that either way is correct....

Gar·and

Show Spelled [gar-uhnd, guh-rand]

John C, 1888–1974, U.S. inventor of M-1 semiautomatic rifle, born in Canada.

Hardly an abomination, and I can't believe I wasted my time looking it up....

Re: What the heck do YOU call it?

I've heard it pronounced "em one grand" so many times I've stopped smacking my head against the wall. As with most things, I mentally correct the error and go on about my business. I had someone argue with me that the first 'a' is silent; after that I pretty much gave up.
