Re: what to clean s&b lens with?

I have used the USO method on my 5-25, and it worked like a charm. For whatever reason, deadly cautioned against it on my Hensoldt. Don't really know why, could be because of the lenses coatings. In any case, it worked well on the Bender.

First blow very very clean low pressure compressed air to remove and dust. The quality of air from that has a filter system that allows air to be used for auto painting or a can or compressed air.

Then use Pancro and Kimwipes don't have part number right now they are the ones that are "Nonscratching Tissue Paper Also known as Kimwipes, these low-lint wipes are soft, gentle, and absorbent. Ideal for delicate cleaning tasks.

Dude we saw a guy blow compressed air on his 5-25x S&B and shatter the objective lense... if the scope is warm, like in sunlight and the compressed air gets cold, your scope is toast...

Word to the wise with compressed air can ruin your day. About 30 people were standing around when it happened.

Could've sworn that I saw a thread here with some pics and the same thing happening to a Premier scope.

Re: what to clean s&b lens with?

Dude word to the wise; compressed air can make your day and you will be very happy to have not polished your lens with grit.

It's best to use as I stated above very clean low pressure compressed air like the kind used at autobody shop. Never have used canned air or tried to clean lens at the range. I've used very low compressed air at home to clean camera and riflescope lens a little over 20 years and no problem. There is no way 3 to 5 psi air pressure held 4' to 6" away is going to shatter a lens.

You don't say if guy at range was using unregulated canned air or a compressor with poor air pressure regulation.

It has nothing to do with the pressure of blowing air on the lens, and everything to do with the temperature of the pressurized air (eg, it's COLD).

I was there when that happened... It was crazy to see a $3000 scope instantly turn worthless.

Re: what to clean s&b lens with?

I use the following on my camera lenses:

First use a blower bulb to remove any dust or debris

If you really need to touch you lens you can use use ROR with Pec-Pads or KimWipes

http://www.amazon.com/PEC-PAD-Lint-Free-Wipes-100per/dp/B0001M6K24/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_b

I think the number one error people make is over cleaning your lenses. You can have quite a bit of stuff on the objective before you will notice image degradation, so you are risking scratching the lens for very little benefit. Blow them clean all you like, but save touching it for when it really needs it.

Here's a link with some pics take through a fouled lens.

Re: what to clean s&b lens with?

Ugh... I really avoid cleaning my scope lenses if I don't have to. For dust and sand I blow off what I can and then delicately use an ACOG lens brush.
If for some reason an AP brush mists solvents or some dingbat with greasy mitts finger bonks my lens, I use the lens cleaner from my Otis kit and lens paper. Tissue paper will also work but make sure it is "lotion free".

When rifle cleaning I protect the lenses as best I can by closing the lens covers and then putting a rag over the scope to prevent solvent speckles.

Cleaning my lenses is a rare occasion for me besides a light blow and brush. Most lens scratches/swirls I've seen were from operator error. Go slow and be careful.
