Well it looks like a company is flying me down to Houston, and I'll be there from Oct. 5 - Oct. 9.

So my question to you guys is, what should I do while I'm there? I'll be busy with an interview thursday morning/afternoon, but I'm free after that. Anything that I should checkout/do while I'm there?

Re: What to do in Houston...

Houstons just another city. No offense to the Houstonians. Get the hell out and see some of the beautiful Texas Gulf Coast. Head south on hiway 59/77 to Refugio (pronounced Re-fhur-io), then east towards the coast and the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, winter home of the whooping crane and one of the biggest Live Oak trees in the world. I havent seen it for 40 years but it was HUGE even then. Then back up the coastal hiway.

Or due west past Austin and check out the Texas Hill Country around Wimberly and Leakey. Gorgeous, but probrably a bit dry now. Look up Shaggy and Wil.....on second thought...

Re: What to do in Houston...

Thanks for the replies, so far its sounding like there is not much to do there! Unfortunately I do not have a vehicle for my trip, I'll have to rely on people I know in town for rides. SO that probably counts out going to the coast, though there is a small possibility of fishing on the Saturday.

It's outstanding.

Not sure if it's still there, but the Crazy Cajun restaurant just up the street had really, really good gator and steak.

Cheers,

Thanks, I'll check those out!

will you be alone, or with more people around your age?

if so, i would totally hit up rice village for the night life....ive done pretty much everything there is to do in houston....and thats the only thing i go back too..

others have said the gulf coast...i was born on the gulf coast..raised on it...and still live there....its nothing special...and offers nothing to really do

There is a possibility of a few other people I know my age that'll also be in Houston that time. Could end up being just me though.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out!

I lived there for almost 4 years and can tell you the top 3 things to do in Houston are:

1) Eat
2) Eat
3) Eat

Re: What to do in Houston...

After my 4 year stint, I'll second that emotion; big/small, cheap/expensive, all flavors all the time. BTW, The Crazy Cajun was a mandatory stop with each visit but closed a couple of years ago.
( NASA was cool at the time 80's-90's)

Re: What to do in Houston...

o +1 on Johnson Space Center - Excellent exhibits

o Spend weekend in Galveston and go to Col Bubbies (do a search) - one of the "last true surplus" stores left. Even though "The Strand" was flooded by Hurricane Ike, Col Bubbies still survives. The owner passed away, but his wife continues his legacy with the store.

Re: What to do in Houston...

Heck, I remember Col. Bubbles!

That place was fantastic. Can't believe it is still in business... and still as good as it ever was. Col Bubbles was a blast and I bought a ton of stuff from them, much of which I still have.

Last time I was there, I recall, they were trying to sell a halftrack. I should have bought it.

Cheers,

Sirhr
