Ok guys here is my dilemma I have a superb little tikka T3 lite in .308 Winchester which I hunt with I also have a old kimber 6.5x55 Mauser and a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington plus a Rem 770 30 06 (got as a gift) I feel like I have my hunting rifles covered but I came into this Rem 721 for cheap

now here is the Question do I

A) leave it alone because everyone should have
a 30 06?

B) Get a new barrel in 6.5 x 06 because I really like 6.5 rounds?

So what would you do and why?

Everybody will have their own take, and all I can give you is mine. You can only hunt with one rifle at a time, and the more different rifles you have, the more different ammo you need, plus scope/optics for each, and you gain little familiarity with each because you can't spend as much time to be familiar with each.

So, what I would do, is this: Keep the Tikka .308, sell all the rest, and buy a Tikka T3 CTR in 260 Rem or 6.5 Creedmoor, and scope them both with good quality optics. Now you have both short and long range covered, with two rifles with identical controls......

Oh I forgot to mention I have a savage 10 fcp
6.5 creedmoor but I don't consider it a hunting gun right now because of how heavy it is its topped with an Athlon Argos 6x24x56 for shooting at paper

I agree with Bob, sell it and maybe some of the others too. Maybe keep the .30-06 for you and the .308 for your kids to hunt with if you have any. Keep the savage for long range and you are all set.

I tend to avoid too much overlap in my rifles, so I sell a couple cheaper rifles to fund a single quality rifle that has its place.. Nothing wrong with a niche gun or simply a beauty, but you do have hunting rifles covered!

Robert Snyder is converting my 270 Rem 721 into a 300WM in a Manners T4A for me. Since I don't hunt, it's going to be my 1000+ steel & paper rifle.

I have seen 721s left alone and hot-rodded just like 700s. If you want to do something with the trigger, just know the tang will have to be inletted like a 700 to accept a 700 trigger.

What does something like that set you back? I have a 20+ year old Rem 700 in 30-06 that I thought about converting to 300WM. A bit unsure of costs. Mine is an ADL and would need DBM, so that adds some $.

Depends on how you do it. Source some of the long lead time parts yourself will cut on wait time a little and maybe some cost (doubtful). I was collecting parts for a couple years before I sent it in. Robert's rates are on his website, as are most other folks'.

When all is said and done, including optics (G2 Razor 4.5-27), Spuhr mount, new DBM (finding one was the hassle) I will have over $5K into it. Not the cheapest way to go, but it is how I spec'd it and Robert's spending a bunch of time making it right for me.

Shoot me a PM and I can email you a spreadsheet of costs and sourcing.

If it were me I'd sell all but the Tikka or Kimber, or even sell all of them to build/ buy an extremely high quality rifle. Something in the 6.5 or 7mm short action family of cases possibly, but this is just me.

I had Travis Stevens of TS Customs rebarrel a Tikka for me. Cost for the barrel, then,to true the action, thread the muzzle, chamber the blank and bead blast was just about 1k and was done in only 3 months.
