What to do with my older model Rem LA?

i have a long Action 1980s model Rem 700. It was my 1st rifle (30-06). I moved to 6.5 Creedmoor for competition a while back. I thought I would rebarrel the LA to a long range hunting rifle.
What caliber do you suggest?
6.5x284, 7mm, etc?

I rebarreled my Rem 700 30.06 to a 6.5X55 Swede. Great hunting round.

6.5x284 or 7 SAUM. I have both on a LA , I use the 6.5 for everything up to deer and the 7 for everything bigger.

6.5x55 or 6.5x55 AI. Either can use Lapua brass which sells for around $76.00 per hundred. Which is damn cheap for Lapua brass.

284 Winchester, to enable seating long bullets out of the neck shoulder junction. Do a 7.25 twist to get the full BC out of the 183 - 195 gr.

Which ones in particular are you referring to?

for match shooting, the current crop of 200-230gr Bergers and the new-er crop of Hornadays. 208+ gr ELD-Ms. These rounds with powder like R26, retumbo give the 30-06 what was 300wm performance a few years ago. 185-210 Berger hunting bullets, along with eld-Xs coupled with the slower burning powders gave the 30-06 a refresh IMO. We're not stuck with 165gr soft points or 1980s 200gr SMKs.

Edit: My second choice would be 6.5x284, only because I have like 700 pieces of brass from old match barrels. Only concern I would I have is feeding with the rebate rim on factory feed rails, but it's super accurate.

I’d be very keen to work up a .30-06 as well. Long heavy barrel and quality bullets. I bet if you did the leg work that old round could embarrass some of the “new fangled “ rounds that are so popular.

Better check the twist rate on your old 30. You need a 10 twist for the heaviest 30 cal bullets. You might have a 11 or 12 twist which would mean using lighter bullets appropriate to the twist.

If optimizing the 06, I'd select a long, heavy barrel with an appropriate twist rate for the weight of the bullet. I wasn't suggesting limiting performance by leaving the current barrel in place...

I was assuming the barrel was being replaced during the rebuild. If I build one it'll be a 24-25" 9.5 twist.

Or get one of those sweet new walnut stocks there is a thread about in the vintage rifle section. Those are classy
