Hunting & Fishing What to do . . .

I'm about to embark on some coyote hunting in Central KY.

What the heck do I do with a dead coyote?

Let's assume that I killed 2: one which is mighty fine looking that I'd like to keep the pelt, and another which is uglier than Chelsey Clinton that I have no desire to even touch, much less keep as a momento.

Do I need to skin it on the spot and take the hide somewhere? Do I throw that bad boy in a freezer and take the whole dog to have it skinned, etc?

Do I simply leave the uly one in the field where I shot him?

Re: What to do . . .

skin the one you like, leave the mangy one on the ground!

have the hide tanned. The head and lip area are important. If you don't wanna undertake it, just cut the head off and leave it attached to the coyote pelt.

Just make sure there isn't a law that the coyotes have to stay in the county that they were shot in. Some states have that.

Re: What to do . . .

i 2nd the above advice . if your new to hunting/skinning it takes some practice to be able to do a decent skinning job . if you want the pelt , wash ALL the blood off the fur , either take it to a pro asap or freeze it in a sealed container until you can . if their ugly or mangy leave them alone you dont want to touch/ spread any disease . a dead coyote is a good coyote.

Coyote is past that place where I draw my culinary line.

You might consider talking to your taxidermist. I shot a very nice yote last year in south central KY and my taxidermist advised me to just put the whole dog in a garbage bag and bring it to him- he did all the skinning and disposal.

That's probably the best route for me. If I tried, I'd bet all I'd too is tear it up too badly to be used for anything.
