Simple and custom for you. Use a soldering iron with the fine point for fine stippling, a chisel edge for serrated type or the fat end of the fine point (flip it over) for a scale type finish. Takes less time than you might think and it's completely "yours"
I've done one stock with Devcon, then repainted it with decent results. I like the idea of the grip tape though. If you sell the stock, someone might not like what you did. So removable might be better.
Go too the hardware store and look for tread tape which is what you put on stairs. You can custom cut it for your needs, sticks like hell in all weather conditions and it is easy on weapon finishes if you need to remove it. It is little more course then skateboard tape for a solid grip.
