What Vises Are You Using (Barrel or otherwise)

I use two - a (not made in China) Wilton Bullet Vise and an Orange/Area419 Setup. Adding in the Orange with the Area419 package really made tasks like removing/installing muzzle devices much easier since I don't have a dedicated barrel vise.

Before I bought the Orange, I almost bought the Short Action Customs Kit several different times. Has anyone used it? It looks very nice and not too expensive for what you get.

Here's mine:

I have the SAC Modular Vise kit, and it's fantastic. I was coming from a Mechforce vise, and the SAC is a huge step up in both quality and user experience. The Mechforce required a TON of torque on all four bolts to prevent slipping, so much torque that the top plate was bending and the nuts were cutting into the top plate. The SAC requires much less torque on a single bolt, and the top clamp plate will be one of the last pieces to fail from what I can tell.

My one wish on the SAC setup is that the inserts were retained a little more positively, it's always a bit finnicky to get them set just right in the clamp with a barrel in it. But it's still so much better to use than my last vise, I'll never go back.

Vises are just like any other tool. Depending on what you're doing you may need different capabilities from your vise. As you expand your projects you're probably going to expand the number of vises you own. If you have an expensive vise I doubt you're going to beat on it. If you're doing work on something that you're worried about damaging surfaces, I doubt you're going to be comfortable putting it in anything that doesn't have soft jaws. There are times what the standard straight up or straight horizontal is going to work so you'll need something that you can set at whatever angle works best.

You will either compromise or buy a new vise that will fit your task better!
