Re: What was the problem here?

He didn't care about staying awake because he wanted to die. He got a "tune up" because his fellow marines wanted to friggin live and they get punished. Thats the marines for ya. They should have put a damn medal on their chests for scuffing the guy up. He did not belong there. His superiors should go to jail for not noticing his mental state. Not the guys trying to stay alive. This stuff drives me nutz and really there is no reason why this should be a matter of public record anyway.

Leader ship from the front. It is getting harder and harder to get good leaders. They do not want to say they have failing Marines. I was on gard duty during peace time and would do anything to stay awake. I do not know what my friends would have done if I would have fallen asleep in an area where real death was possible. I know I would not be happy if one of the guys I was serving with was sleeping on post.

Leadership was being displayed at the lowest level.

From the fellow Lance Corporal to the squad leader Sergeant.

It's the assholes in high places that fucked it all up.

"Took him off patrol..."????

Hell, they should have put him on patrol and left him deep in Taliban territory.

"Gee, Sarge, I dunno what happened...he was right behind us..."

No American warfighters should die because of the incompetence or indifference of a mentally disturbed individual, and if the higher-ups won't do their job, then by God they better expect it to get taken care of in a field-expedient manner and not complain when it does.

I love our military men and women who take their job and oath seriously. Those who don't anger me, and as with any group there is invariably a very small (but usually highly visible) minority who just don't belong and don't represent the group as a whole. This story elegantly illustrates one of those individuals.

In your lifetime?

Re: What was the problem here?

I was never in the service, but in thinking about it, the guy got a mimimum of what he deserved. If my life were depending on him I might have shoved a habanero pepper up his ass....that would have kept him awake for a bit.

No reason to blow yourself away....He could have just gone to his commander and told him "I cant stay awake sir....could you transfer me to the mess tent/supply, etc". Im sure they would have dealt with it then.

He must have had some other problem and didnt belong where he was.

Sad

That there might be a medical reason for him falling asleep crossed my mind. Once deployed he as too far into the assimilation process to go to his CO asking for a transfer. None of us can say whether this was a matter of laziness or apathy versus biology; but I hope given the outcome I hope it wasn't the latter.
