Scientists trying to clone, resurrect extinct mammoth

"Instead of Jurassic Park, try Pleistocene Park.

A team of scientists from Japan, Russia and the United States hopes to clone a mammoth, a symbol of Earth’s ice age that ended 12,000 years ago, according to a report in Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun. The researchers say they hope to produce a baby mammoth within six years.

The scientists say they will extract DNA from a mammoth carcass that has been preserved in a Russian laboratory and insert it into the egg cells of an African elephant in hopes of producing a mammoth embryo...."

If they can get $15,000 for a trophy African tusker, how much will they be able to charge for a resurrected Woolly Mammoth? And will Holland & Holland deem the .700 Nitro Express too anemic for such a beast and go for a new 1 caliber?

I don't have enough wall for that mount. The fur coats for all the relatives would cut down on Christmas expenditures, so maybe the trophy fee could be a wash...

Geez, don't tell them that. I'm sure that's disheartening enough all those scientists will just give up and go home.

That reminds me of the Northern Exposure episode, 'Lovers and Madmen.' Dr. Fleischman discovers a half-thawed mammoth in a receding glacier. Before he can return with a scientist to confirm his find, Walt drags off the carcass and sets to butchering it, much to Dr. Fleischman's horror.

Walt: Have you ever tried mammoth, Joel?
Joel: Tried? What do you mean try? Try as in eat?
Walt: Better than the finest air-dried beef.

Dobbs beat me to it.
That kind of aged meat in the hands of the deranged master chef Adam could be amazing.

Re: What'll the trophy fee be for a Woolly Mammoth?

My 94 year old neighbor claims to have eaten glacially preserved mammoth when he was a youngster. It DOES happen from time to time that a frozen mammoth is found in a receeding glacier. There are several accounts of this in the early 1900's. I believe the smithsonian owns a tanned hide from one. There are several people to claim they own ivory (not fossilized) tusks from these. I would hesitate to consume such a thing personally...
