What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

My pockets aren't as deep as some guys so shooting FGGM all the time is just not realistic.

I went to Walmart and got two boxes of 150gr Federal but wasn't really impressed. So what's a good plinking ammo for a hunting rifle? Dick's has those Remington Core Lok ones on sale.

Re: What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

Just depends on how much you are looking to spend and what level of accuracy you find acceptable.

Southwest Ammo has 168gr and 175gr "Run-n-Gun" ammo for as cheap as around $0.75/round and 147gr "Range" ammo for as cheap as around $0.60/round.

Re: What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

I know this doesn't answer your question JelloStorm but you really need to look into reloading. It will change your life ! Plus I guarantee the equipment will pay for itself in the first 750 rnds. you prepare. I did the math a few of months ago for a friend who was complaining about match ammo prices and now he's teaching me new things. Anyway if you opt not to take the advise I would recommend you look at Southwest ammo who advertise here on the HIDE. I have read great reviews on their stuff and their prices are just right for match grade ammo (A little more than the low end,non match, stuff but plenty cheaper than FGGM).If I did not hand load this would be the route I would go.

Re: What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

I definitely want to get into reloading, however the wife, kids and I live in a pretty small house so there is no room for a setup that the kids couldn't get into.

Once we get a new house I'll be springing for a nice RCBS single stage setup and possibly a Dillon 550 for making 5.56 and my pistol rounds.

Re: What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

I ordered a case of Prvi .308 Match 175 gr, and it works pretty well in my Remmy 5R. Accuracy is not up there with FGMM (but still under MOA). Better than a lot of "hunting" ammo I've tried. At about 65 cents per round it's not bad.

If your gun has a tight chamber, buy a single box and see how it chambers prior to ordering in quantity.

Regardless of what you decide, here's a good search engine to find it cheaply...

Re: What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

You don't nee a bunch of room to reload. If you look through this the picture thread on this site you will see a couple of very compact and functional setups. While we all like the idea of (and some actually have it) a man cave. All one really needs a footlocker and a kitchen table. And truth be told this will be the most economical route for ammo.

Also when it comes to "practice ammo" it is something that should not exist, particularly in a precision rifle. If you adhere to the philosophy of you fight like you train and train like you fight then one needs to practice and become familiar with the ballistics of the ammunition that is coming out of their rifle. How are you going to learn the ballistics of one ammo if you don't practice with it?

Re: What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

You don't need a lot of space to reload. You could probably fit everything into a small storage crate and lock it away from the kids. For the press I mounted mine to some wood and then I clamp that wood to a worktable, I can store it away easily.

Yeah but I literally don't have any spare space for it. I hate this fucking house!

Re: What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

Another option: Southwest Ammo's Run & Gun line. Plus they are a sponsor here.

For gosh's sake stay away from "USA ammo"! I love them for cheap range handgun rounds but I will never put them in a rifle again.

I am pretty much a novice to centerfire rifles. The irony is this though, I have lurked and learned alot from this forum and always went with ammo recommendations. I passed this on to my brother who recently bought a new RRA .308 and recommended Fed and Black Hills. My brother recently bought some of that WalMart Fed stuff and put it through his new RRA .308semi and was pulling some 1/2" 5 shot groups. It didn't work for me at all in any rifle I own, but it worked in his!! I also ran chrono numbers on it at the time and it got better SD and ES numbers that FGMM! Still dont believe it honestly..
One I tried recently with good results was HSM 168gr using a Sierra HPBT that I picked up at Cabelas... on sale for like 15.00 a box. May not be on sale anymore but it worked well!!

I had a DPMS SASS that shot the cheap wallyworld fed 190s as well as anything "match" I fed through it. Unfortunately that good fortune didnt carry over to any of my other rifles though. It sure was nice only paying $12 a box for accurate .308 that I was shooting through a semi though.

Re: What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

If you're not reloading

PRVI-Partisan "match" 168/175 is good (the term match is used loosely here)

And if you just want to sling lead for shits grins, the cheapest and best surplus i've found is that german DAG ammo in the 200rd sealed battle packs.

I just put some of this through my gun. The 168s were a little rough but the 175s were awful. They wouldn't chamber worth a crap and the recoil was significantly higher than any of the other 175s or 178 that we shot. Two guns were an SPS tactical and an SPS Tactical AAC SD. Accuracy wasn't horrible but all things considered I won't be buying any more of it.

Re: What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

I agree with the Ultra max. I purchased a bulk ammo box (the green ammo box style) from Fort Worth's Cabelas and it wasn't bad.
I would buy that stuff again in a heartbeat if they still carry it.

Re: What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

American eagle 150gr. They are as cheap as 55 cents a round when on sale and shoot great. There's always a flyer here and there, but honestly for me, except for the fliers every 3-4 shots, the groups are as good as match ammo.

Re: What's a good 308 plinking ammo?

If your're thinking of started reloading some day, start saving your brass now. That's one less component you'll have to stock up on later.

And if you're looking for just the cheapest lead-throwing ammo you can get, try This Link for a list of surplus military ammo. There shouldn't be any dangerous or corrosive ammo on that list. But remember that most of it is Berdan primed, meaning that you can't use it for reloading. But some of it is Boxer primed and can be reloaded. I got 1,000 rounds of the new PRIVI ammo for my M1As a while back - Boxer primed and 41 cents a round delivered to my door from Wideners.
