I am curious what you guys think is a good blade for your EDC tasks? In civvies I usually prefer my Benchmade 527 (at Benchmade right now for warranty service), but at work I carry an Ontario Rat 1.

What do you guys and gals in the community like to carry for an EDC blade?

Re: What's your EDC knife?

I carry a Benchmade 9100 Auto Stryker. I carry it pretty much every where but church, I carry a small bone handle pocket knife there. I still carry my gun into church (not that naive) but I leave the large auto folder at the house.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

FWIW I carry a Emerson CQC7 with the wave feature. I had never been a big fan of coated, tanto style blades and was skeptical of the wave feature cause I didnt want to pull out my knife to do something and the blade deploy before I was ready, but I have grown to really like all of those features. And the "only ground on one side blade edge" I dont know the techincal term for it seems to hold a usable edge longer than any of my former standard benchmades did, not that benchmades are bad I'm reffering to the edge profile itself. Ive cut wires, opened elecrical boxes, scraped gaskets, dug dirt out of bolt holes, scraped under the mower deck and pretty much anything else you aint supposed to do with a pocket knife and it still cuts good when I use it for what its supposed to do.

I believe it's referred to as a chisel grind.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

Benchmade mini-griptillian (556). If autos were an option for EDC here I'd use one of those instead. It replaced a Kershaw LEEK which replaced a CRKT M16-00K-- all good knives. Kershaws assisted opening was nice but it broke within 6 months.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

depends on the weather and what im wearing. Most of the time its a cold steel bowie spike but I got some recon 1's in today and they are nice. I sometimes carry a S&W homeland security. But that thing is a hog.

I won't lie I'm a sucker for cold steel knives.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

i carried my EMERSON combat commander for years waited for months to get it and swore i would never carry another knife well i got this ZT about a year ago and will not put it away it is quite embarrasing actually

Re: What's your EDC knife?

I carry an Emerson Commander with the wave and a Emerson CQC-15 with the wave. I use the the Commander for cutting everything I am not supposed to be cutting with a knife and the CQC-15 for everything else. I have owned 5 or 6 of his knives over the last few years and havent found anything else I feel as comfortable with. I have seriously beat the piss out of these knives and they just plain work.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

I used to carry a Microtech Mini-SOCOM (manual version).

Since I got sucked into the Benchmade factory showroom this special one followed me home:

At work I carry it as well as another Benchmade and CRKT M1.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

I carry a Blade-tech Ganyana with S30V and a Damascus Case muskrat every day. During hunting season, which for me lasts from Aug through March, I also carry a fixed blade- Ingram, Dozier, Crotts, Krein, or Kauffman. All D2 or S30V.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

Benchmade folder - don't know the model #. It's ATS-34 steel w/ 4" blade. I've had it for 15+ years. It's broken in so that I can simply flip my wrist to open it. It has caped two bears in Alaska and boned 3 elk in Montana. I've carried it for work on boardings too. Lots of memories with that knife.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

These are my EDC's. Horton Knives BEDC on my belt, it's made out of D2 Steel. And a Horton Knives Mini Japanese style wrap in my back pocket, A2 Steel.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

Emerson Carambit, the point and the drag option when cutting makes it extremely powerful at unzipping anything (That you can cut)in it's way, plus it's one of the lightest knives that does a tremendous amount of work. The loop at the end makes it hard to loose, you can attach it to a carabiner/vest,pocket, belt . Emerson comander is my second choice but not far removed from the first. Plus, blade is easy to sharpen and stays sharp thru much cutting.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

LW,

Can someone place an order with them for a custom like this? Thanks! (never mind, just visited their site & they do!)

I currently carry an Al Mar Auto SERE for EDC....

Re: What's your EDC knife?

Bill, yep they do. And if you are in the Oregon City area they will do it all right there.

Since the EGA is a stock design it was easy to get done.

The reason I carry a "high dollar" folder is the same reason I invest a little more in any of my day-to-day equipment. I don't want to have to worry about it, and I don't want it to be the limiting factor.

I know lots of guys who carry $20 knives and replace them regularly. When I was younger I used to carry a Benchmade that I bought for $40 or so. I still have two of those knives laying around. I was also a fan of the Spyderco's since they could open MRE's and cut brush easily. I rarely ever carried shears on a stalk because they cut so well. I just couldn't bring myself to lower my standards and buy some of the Chinese junk my coworkers carry.

Now please bear in mind, it's all relative. A $150 folder is not generally considered "expensive" in the knife world. I would say it's more "average". I have paid $300+ for a couple of the production knives I have in my case. One of the knives I carry as a "last ditch" is more than that. A Chris Reeve Sebenza (Large with no embellishing) is going to run you $400 or so. When you get into the "art" type customs it goes way up. Any of these can be carried as an EDC.

You could turn it around and ask "why carry a custom 1911 when 90% of the factory 1911's will accomplish the same task?"

Mostly it's because that is what the owner wants to do.

I know quite a few who carry them. They are solid knives, but IIRC most are made overseas.

That is one of the things that is swaying me away from CRKT and back to Benchmade. I love that I can see Americans gainfully employed and get a kickass product at a competitive price.

Indeed, I like buying USA made things. But IMO if a company holds outstanding QC and they have a product that I like I will buy it. Yeah I would rather USA made any day of the week But sometimes my budget just can't swing it or the product is not something I would like to have.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

Leatherman CS4 juice for EDC, as I would rather have a CCW permit and a pistol for protection. But when carrying a knife for protection, then Emerson Karambit or Spyderco P'Kal.

Just my opinion. I have found the Cold steel knives very hard to sharpen and they don't get as sharp as I think a knife should be. I think they are sweet looking knives but I have an issue with their lack of cutting power. I use many techniques when sharpening a knife and many knives have many different characteristics..... I had a Hunter version and it was a nice looking knife and I thought it was going to be a sweetheart of a hunting knife................. I tried everything to get it sharp............but to no avail........ I gave it to my first cousins kid...........

I wonder If you got a bad blade. I have never had any problems. I use a whet stone (fine) and all my cold steel is razor sharp. GI tanto, recon 1, bowie spike, ti lite and a finn wolf. all incredibly sharp. There is 1 benchmade that I liked but there is no way in hell I can afford it. (I think it was a 760)

Oh and I have a remington tactical knife (forget the model but its discontinued.) I have a Randall knife too. But IMO its to pretty to use.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

Kershaw ZT 0350ST. S30V assisted opener that has done everything from dress elk to dig rocks out of a fencepost hole. Easier to deploy than any of the Benchmade automatics that now sit in the drawer. Not a good tactical, point is too broad.

Re: What's your EDC knife?

CRKT Kit Carson M4 automatic. I have been carrying it a couple of years and it has held up well. Not real expensive...good heft to it, has a very solid blade lock up and fits my hand well.

I will have to disagree with that. Ive had a few Cold Steel knives and the double edged fighting knife was always VERY sharp. Almost to sharp for the sheath that came with it because when holstered quick it would slice thru it. I saw a guy shave with the same designed knife at a gun show. They are impressive knives to me.

You have had to got a bad piece of steel for a blade. Mine are easy to sharpen!

Re: What's your EDC knife?

I will have a Benchmade Auto Stryker one of these days, are they still crediting Alan?

My knife gets used way more often than the 1911, I was being facetious.....

I was given the Griptilian as a present (gave the wife a list with a replacement Stryker on it and she was sold the Griptilian). At first I didn't think I was going to like the Axis lock, but I really like it now.

I do understand quality, I just haven't had the funds to try a real top end knife, its one of those purchases that I feel I can could get a quality tool for the job and still have money left over for other things if I don't go overboard.

On a side note, I once got a Spyderco (nid nineties) and I shoed it to me wife. She asked what good the serrations were for, to which I explained the ease of cutting seat belts in an emergency. She didn't buy it as I am a civilian type guy.....I shit you not, in less than one week I had to use it to get a gal that was out of her Grand Cherokee that rolled 1.5 times right behind me into the parking lot of the car wash I was using.
