Whats your favorite powder for .260 Remington?

Re: Whats your favorite powder for .260 Remington?

I don't shoot the .260 but with the similar capacity 6.5 Creedmoor H4350 and the 140grn bullets work great.

Re: Whats your favorite powder for .260 Remington?

H-4350. I have also used it for 95gr V-Max at minimum charge, because the 46.0gr charge does a good job of filling the case to produce a high load density percentage.

With a harmonic barrel tuner, it produced ridiculously small groups at 200yd, but the tuner would go out of tune whenever the weather changed. Never went back to redevelop a load without the tuner. Good project for sometime soon.

ive been told repeadedly to use h4350 but right now i use n-150 and am pretty pleased with it. ive heard that h4350 works better so next time i get a chance ill get some to try

i shoot a 260 with 142 smk

Re: Whats your favorite powder for .260 Remington?

If it matters to anyone H4350 is part of the Hodgdon Extreme line and is less temp sensitive than the IMR powder.

My main powder is H4350, but for the light bullets in 260Rem, like a 100 gr Nosler Ballistic tip, I use canister IMR4895.

Quickload prediction 59,342 psi 3,233 fps
Chronographs at 3,244 fps

Very light bullets?

Re: Whats your favorite powder for .260 Remington?

I've used H4350, H4831SC, Ramshot Big Game (burn rate similar to H414/W760), and Ramshot Hunter (burn rate similar to H4350).

The H4831SC provided good accuracy but deficient velocity, even in compressed loads, with any bullets I tried that fits in the .260's weight range (95-144gr).

I think that IMR/H-4895, W748, TAC, and maybe IMR4064 would work best for bullets in the 95-120gr weight range.

For some reason, never was able to get anywhere near a full case charge with Varget; it worked best at somewhere around 34-38gr with the appropriate bullets. Economical, perhaps; but there's always that nagging thought in the back of the mind about load density percentage. Still; it was the 'propellant of the moment' (according to the resident experts) for the .260 back in 2001 at Raton. This bears revisiting...

Meanwhile, my handloading/shooting thinking cap is about to get hung up for the remainder of the Winter, while I make ready my departure for Orlando.

Truth be told, it was a discouraging year for me, marksmanship-wise. I am tempted to set the Centerfires aside in favor of Rimfires for awhile. Not at all convinced my load development was ever actually effective. I have a whole Winter to ruminate on this idea.

Scary, eh...?

I have an HS sporter (criminal to discuss on the hide, I know) in .260 that loves IMR 4064 as long as you're pushing 120s.

Ah Greg,
Someone's been cooking frownies.
Get out and shoot with some friends STAT! LOL

Rimfires are so much fun.
I am wanting to try out one of those Leapold Mark 2's on a Ruger 10-22.
Getting hits at 300 yards on a steel bucket is within reason.
Like miniature Palma..........I can't wait.
900 rounds expended last time I was out.

OH and H4350 hands down for the .260 and 120-140 grainers.

Re: Whats your favorite powder for .260 Remington?

One of the things I've done to make the Rimfire practice more realistic is to produce 1/2 sized FV200 targets for use at 50yd with the .22LR. Tentatively calling them RFV50 and PalmaRFV50 targets. I intend to put them to use as practice, and if it works out well, perhaps may look at seeing of there's any interest in a course of fire for a more formal competition venue. But I'm very leary of doing anything that might cut into the poplarity of the FV200 program STP's been running.

Re: Whats your favorite powder for .260 Remington?

Here's a simple 4 shot group from a few weeks ago before a match. This was shot at 600 yards to confirm my elevation. I held dead on the Shoot-N-C and shot it within 30 seconds. The powder used is H4350. IMO, you can not find a better powder for the 260. There are others that will get you a little more velocity (maybe 40 fps more), but not near the consistancy. It's right at 1 1/4" from center to center.

Re: Whats your favorite powder for .260 Remington?

Ed,
I had posted earlier to answer your question and I see for some reason it never did post!!

I used Varget with my first two 260s shooting the 140AMAXs. They both loved Varget and AMAXs for some reason. My 6.5x284 would also shoot the 140AMAXs better at long range than the Sierras.

My last 260 would not shoot the AMAXs at mag length without vertical stringing. So I went to the 140MKs so I could load them mag length but they would still kiss the rifling and it became a tack driver. I then had the barrel set back and switched to 123s and H4350 and it loves this load.

Re: Whats your favorite powder for .260 Remington?

I use H4831SC in all the 260s with 139s. Speed will vary on barrel lentgh from 2800 (24"barrel) to 2960(30"barrel). Tried H4350 seems to run a higher pressure. Also have tried RL-17.
Once I run out of H4831 I will switch to the others because of supply and had good results with these powders also.
