When to Clean Silencer?

I got a .22 silencer, and now I have a .30 on the way.

1. How do I know when a silencer has to be cleaned?

2. Should I get covers from the manufacturer (Banish/Silencer Central), or is there aftermarket stuff that's better?

I go by weight of the suppressor. Weigh it when new and when it has gained a oz or two, clean it. My precision rifle cans get cleaned once a year at the same time. I don’t shoot as much as i used to so it works out where they are due a cleaning once a year. Powder type, barrel length, and firing schedule also dictate how often they will need cleaning. The .22 can will need cleaning more often than the centerfire stuff.

At the end of the day, if you are unsure, call the manufacturer and ask how to clean and when to clean the suppressor they designed.

Thanks.

Looks like I have a cover on the way for the big can. I had totally forgotten I included it in the order. I did not order one for the .22 job.

The .22 rimfire can needs to be cleaned every 300-500 rounds, no more than 500, or the buildup starts getting really bad.

The centerfire can, as long as you’re not shooting subsonics (really dirty), you can go about 2500 rounds before cleaning. If shooting subs mixed in with supersonic ammo, 1,500 rounds.

For centerfire, TBAC has stated on this site to clean if you are 3 oz over weight when new. I clean about every 500-600 rounds because….im anal? Haha

I know nothing about rimfire.

How do you know when a .22 silencer is too dirty? Does it just blow up or what?
Clean every 300-500 rounds as stated. If you shoot a few hundred rounds in a session it’s best to clean after that session. Much easier to keep up on a 22 can. They get very dirty compared to centerfire

Your 22 can will fill up with carbon powder that will also fall down the barrel into the action if you turn your gun muzzle up as well. Especially if shooting subs on longer barrel hosts.

I can shoot 100 rounds of subs on my 16” rifle and have quite a bit of carbon in the can, thread it on my pistol with a 4” barrel and fire a mag of supersonic stuff and you can see it blowing carbon out the front of the can… barrel length matters but rimfire just gets dirty quicker in general.
