Powder.
Brass.

Folks have hoarded stocked up on components.

But dies? Where or where have all the dies gone?

Can't even buy a simple FL sizing die from any of the major manufactures. Redding, RCBS, Hornady, Forster. All out of stock of everything.

There is a manufacturing component as well. That component is that demand is outstripping current mfg capacity.

Look, you're trying to think rationally about the causes of a completely irrational behavior.

Let me ask you, why did people panic buy toilet paper even though:

1. COVID-19 does not cause any gastrointestinal disease or symptoms
2. Every state's restrictions on public movement and outdoor activity included SPECIFIC EXCEPTIONS for trips to seek medical care and to buy necessities such as food, water, and hygiene products

It's completely irrational behavior that no one can stop.

I know of more people who have tried to get into reloading in the last year than ever before. I say try, they have been buying stuff but they havent gotten everything they need to put together any actual rounds yet. But they are trying to get to that point when they can. Thats where everything is going.
Theyve got brass bullets and dies in the closet... but no powder primers or press or anything else.

"I cant find ammo, Ill try to make my own." And I imagine that they will get everything about the time that factory ammo stays on the shelves regularly.

Got to remember, the country was shut down unless you were “essential” for two-three months or in some cases more(blue controlled states). As ppl were shut down, manufacturers included, as everyone was buying up supplies and components while being shut down. Now we’re dealing with the ripple effect of being shut down and on top of everything being sold out ppl are buying what gets put out on shelves while the distributors are then filling huge back log of everything so it’s going to take awhile to replenish things to be in stock.

I think it's got a lot to do with shooters like "me" ... that have been shooting factory ammo and changed over in the last year to reloading. First factory ammo got scarce, then reloading supplies got scarce, now reloading hardware is scarce ... as more and more shooters move "backwards" in the supply chain to feed their habits. I saw reloading as "insurance" against the ammo shortage ... and participated in creating the next shortage of reloading supplies and components. My guess is there are WAY more reloaders today ... than there were a year ago. Multiply that new number of reloaders times a few dies each, and there's your die shortage.

My friend's father is currently trying to get over COVID-19
He had to wind up going to the hospital for half a day to get enough IV fluids in him, because he couldn't keep anything down including liquids, was having stuff coming out of both ends of the digestive tract, and was getting seriously dehydrated.

My friend on the other hand who got COVID-19 from his father as well, just had a significantly upset stomach but nothing crazy.

Aw hell I have dies for calibers that I don't have guns for any more (30-06, 6.5X55, 44 Magnum/Special).

They're going on gunbroker tonight. If I get $250 for each that's 3K primers.

People who can’t find ammo, so they think they’re going to try to their hands at reloading... If that’s the case, I don’t see this going very well. I just read a PX post where someone quoted a guys for sale post of 8# of powder and asked if that guy would message him because he couldn’t figure out how to.
Not sure you need to be reloading if sending a PM is that difficult but probably just old school, 1967 Lyman manual kinda guy.

I just made my first reloaded primers today, and ive been copper plating my own cast bullets. Im nowhere near out of any supplies but i wanted to see how it worked just in case. Anybody else tried any of this? I ordered 5 lbs of prime all and loaded a few rounds. Seems like a good work around just in case.
