Rifle Scopes Where to measure the sight height from?

Re: Where to measure the sight height from?

The center of the barrel. On a remington there is a little hole right in front of the action where the lugs lock in place. That hole is pretty close to the center

Center of the main tube to center of the barrel / chamber. (basically middle of the bore)

Most like to use the area around the gas release port on the side of the action.

It's not hyper critical so you don't have to be super duper accurate, with an 1/4" is usually ok.

Re: Where to measure the sight height from?

I measure the bolt diameter, scope tube diameter, add them together, divide by 2 and then add the distance from the bottom of the scope tube to the top of the bolt.

For the distance from the scope to the bolt I use an inside caliper (old style) and measure the transfered dimension with an electronic or dial caliper.

Or you can do it like my post above and get the same figure in a fraction of the time and no math degree needed

umm yeah....that seems a bit much, doesn't have to be that exact just close enough.

Even with a simple ruler and eyeballing you can get whitin 1/8"...

With a 100 yds baseline zero, if you are 1/8" off in your sight height measurement the error at 600 yds is only 0.625", and at 1000 yds is 1000 yds is 1.125". Since rarely ballistics programs track that well and we don't measure every environmental variable involved with each shot, worrying about it is largely a waste of time.

With an 308, just an imperceptible scope tracking error of 0.3% (and I'm sure most scopes have WAY more than that) would equal that POI difference at 1000 yds.
