Suppressors which 1911 for 3Gun?

To shoot Heavy Metal Class I need a .45ACP. Before any of you curse me I have a Series 70 Colt Combat Commander which is loved and shot...I do own a 1911...don't kill me.

I was thinking of maybe getting a Colt Series 70 Gold Cup. I see them used for under $1000 all day some as low as $850. Always liked that raised rib on the top of the slide.

Or is there a better way to spend about $1200 to include 6 mags.

I had a HK Tactical in .45 which would have fit in here perfectly but I sold it like a dumbass.

save for a bit first if you have to.... but I'd get a 5" Baer with adjustable sights, used would be fine, as long as no kitchen table gunsmiths had their way with it.

He-Man has the most non-consistent rules from match to match of any division.

It's a pistol...I find it difficult to part with $2K+ for a 1911...it's like spending over $1K on a ACOG...

My rifles and scopes that actually have multiple power ranges are another thing all together.

I want to get set up for it and shoot it when needed. I shot tactical scoped last year and it was a lot of fun and the prize tables were killer.

Just seems there are less gunslingers in the heavy metal class. Smaller pond to be a big fish in...The thought of banging rounds out of a .308 semi, .45 1911, and a 12ga Rem 870 is quite appealing to me.

Ive used a SA TRP for matches before, its not an expensive gun imo so i dont care to beat the shit out of it, yet it performs awesome. 70 series are ok, but you get alot of features in a Springfield TRP or Loaded and they just feel alot better than a Colt to me.

You can easily find a loaded for under $900 and a TRP can be found for less than $1k every now and then

the HK expert would probably work, i have a kimber TLE/RL that i had a little work done on and it shoots as good as my friend's custom guns and i think i have total 1100 in it.

Get a Springer. Check out the loaded model. I hate adjustable sights on a combat handgun. Best bang for the buck in my opinion. I've had 3 and my wife still has her "oh so sweet" BLACK STAINLESS loaded model.

I've sold off my high dollar 1911's and bought a Rock Island then stripped it down to frame, slide, and barrel and replaced everything with Ed Brown parts, 10-8 trigger, and replace all the springs, re-coated her, and slapped some heine straight eights on there. Now she's an $700 custom done with my own hand. The only other thing I would do is checker the front strap and fit a new barrel. That's above my level though so I'll likely have SA do that for me in their custom shop.

Yes, S&W are good. Be careful with the Gold Cup. Some of them
had lightened slides and would not do well with heavy loads.

If you like the raised rib, look for an enhanced model. They have the raised rib w/out the serrations and w/out all the other things that make the GC not a good setup for that type of shooting.

I think S&W has a LEO discount as well...hmmmm...decisions.

The idea of assembling one is usually first and foremost...maybe the next one.

Yes, Colt has the enhanced model.

The Springfield would be a good starting point. Also, keep a look out for a Norinco 1911. They need a little work to smooth them up, but shoot fantastic. They may have been some of the best shooting barrels ever put in a 1911 (no BS).

My buddy had a Norinco and did the same thing I did to mine. Although he didn't mess with the stock barrel long, he sent it to SA and had them fit a new one. His shoots a bit better then mine.... my trigger is better though, LOL.

If you dont want to spend a whole lot and want a 45 go with an Armscor, they are hand assembled in the Philippines and the few I have handled were all very nice and easily shot under 1 inch at 25 yards


The Springfield loaded is also an awesome gun but double the price of the Armscor

I have a Kimber Super Match that I shoot in USPSA single stack class. I have put about 20000 rounds through it with no problems that weren't caused by ammo. I picked up a used one for $1200. STI makes excellent .45's in a wide price range from $600 to several thousand. Dawson Precision has the STI line and there web site makes it easy to look through all the different models.

Gotta be single stack? If not pick up a Para Ltd in 45-shouldn't break the bank and if you can stick a Dawson magwell on it you can feed it well (and fast).

BTW, it's called "multigun" now, not 3 gun anymore. They used to be separate things (3 gun had stages with all three at separate times, multi gun had multiple within one stage), but they are the same now. Some stages will be multi gun in most matches, and some will use only one gun.

Own a S&W 1911PD and absolutely love it! Feel, fit and finish and accuracy are all top-notch, cycles everything I feed it, and it didn't break the bank. One thing to look out for with S&W 1911s is some vertical play in the trigger. The trigger pull itself is phenomenal, but there can be some up/down wiggle to them. Remedied by fitting an aftermarket trigger, not something that would prevent me from buying another. Here's my gun with two targets to give you an idea of what this pistol will do:

my experience with norinco is that they are the best steel and most durable finish i ever encountered however needed feed ramp polished and mag well beveled. trigger is decent if you dont mind the ancient short pull, almost in the handle before you pull it length. sights will make even a trditionalist squint. stainless barrel prints unimpressive groups but perhaps a match busshing would help that, i dont know im more of a "combat accuracy" guy but in working up loads recently was noticing 3" 15 yard groups off a bench. im new to reloading so these aint "match" made for this pistol ropunds by any means but gives you an idea. i picked that gun up in 1993 or 4 and at the time they were considered cheap junk but half the price of colt. ive never been sorry i bought it and always thought it would be cool to send it to a custom smith for a makeover as a race gun.

For he man get a Glock or M&P in 45. If you abandon your loaded gun and transition to a different gun you dont have a safety to screw with. If you leave a hot gun behind without the safety being on its a match DQ.

I use a high cap STI in 9x19. 23 rounds. I havent done a reload at a 3-gun match in years.

I dont shoot He-Man cause its too friggin expensive to feed a 308 compared to a 223. And there is no clear set of rules from match to match...

i would get a kimber they are very accurate and lots of people compare them to the real high end 1911s but really it is all about what feels good to you im sure with a little money you could get any 1911 to shoot exelent maybe just go to a gun shop and hold some and see what you like and if they all feel the same picking off of looks couldnt hurt

I've been surfing the net the last three days looking at everything 1911. I just can't understand why it takes over $1000 to get a 1911 to run.

I will probably just get a Glock 21SF and be done with it...I really don't need the drama.

I use a G35 now with 20 round mags and it shoots just fine.

That STI does look like a great deal and I did see it earlier and thought about it.

I don't understand what all the various rule changes are with the He-man class...what is the reasoning behind the rule changes...the other classes don't change the rules do they?

I carry a Sig P229 for work...maybe I'll just get a P220 to keep things simple.

It doesn't. The Taurus has shitty fit, but runs fine for $500. The RIAs are well-regarded for their price. The Springfield loaded is nicer than both of them and about $800 the last time I checked.

There are some damn nice 1911s out there, but it doesn't cost $1000+ for a decent one. In fact, you can get a used double stack STI for $1000 if you look hard enough.

Sure, the premium 1911s are expensive, but comparing them to a Glock makes no sense. A high dollar 1911 will have a whole bunch of extras like nicer sights, a high beavertail, a mag well, nicer grips, a better barrel, etc. A Glock is a Glock. They're all the same, they're made to be mass produced, etc. And even a Glock with a decent set of sights fitted costs as much or more than the Taurus, which while it isn't the nicest 1911, it is perfectly functional and has a nice list of the options that most would want.

If you already shoot a Glock, and the rules of your 3 gun matches allow it.. I'd agree, go with the 21SF. Reliable, soft shooting and great value.

It doesn't take $1K to make a 1911 run. A trip to VA Beach and a case of beer with a solid basic 1911 and a fist full of cheap parts would get you where you need to be. Just sayin.....

you can start with the springfield military model for 500 or so then replace all the parts as you go. my gunsmith has done this for several cops in my area. they build it how they want and they shoot good. let me know if you want details

Just a thought...

Try shooting a match or two with the gun you have, see what you do or do not like and buy based on the features your current gun is lacking. Ask and observe the others in that division what they shoot.

Basically you are asking us to tell you how our shoes will fit your feet. Go to where the people have similar feet as you and see what they wear for the journey you want to take.

He-Man is the only division with no clear set of rules for all the different orgs/major matches that allow he-man.

It was brainstormed in Pueblo Colorado one day sitting around after a match. Eddie Rhodes, Kurt Miller, and Blaine West are the true fathers of the division.

The last time I shot a 3Gun in Heavy Metal division I used a G21. At the time I didn't own a 1911 other than my Dad's orig Series 70 and my Commander much less have enough mags.

The 21 is a great shooting .45 but due to rules of the division I could not load the mags to full capacity. Not a big issue but the double stack is not an advantage unless it just fits your hand and will have other uses too.

If I decide to shoot HM again I'd probably use my TRP.

Double Star. You can get one at Bud's for about $1050. No MiM. All hand assembled in Winchester, KY. What they don't machine themselves, they use high end 3rd party parts like the Ed Brown Grip Safety, Grieder Trigger.

Check them out. Unfortunately, Double Star doesn't have the 1911 on their web site.

Several good options have been listed and I have had experience with most of them. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. Choosing a 1911 just depends on the features you want and cash you want to spend. Obviously, most custom built 1911's will out perform the others, but is it worth the extra money <span style="text-decoration: underline">to you</span>?
If your considering non 1911 options, I would recommend a Springfield XD 5" with 13+1 capacity. Everyone I know that has shot the 5" XD, comments on how getting on target quickly is almost effortless. I prefer the older models without the interchangeable grips (just personal preference). Again, many good options exist. It would be so much easier if everyone made crappy guns except one company.

If hitting multiple targets quickly is your game, 5"XD is a fine choice. If super tight groups is your game, maybe you should stick with a custom 1911. Myself, not much on precision shooting with handguns. Although, I have been known to hit steel plates all day long at 50-75yds, with XD's and 1911's. After a few shots to figure out hold over. That big chunk of lead drops quickly at that distance. Kind a fun to hear "bang", quick count to 2 and then hear "ding".

Come to think of it, any kind of shooting is fun! Unless your on the receiving end.

You may want to consider a regular G21 and have the backstrap modified (Filled and cutdown), the availability of non-SF mags makes it a better choice IMO.
An S_I 2011 would be a good route, and if you don't want to drop big bucks, you could get a Para double stack 1911. Many say they suck, but I know many of them work well too.
If you shoot and train with P229, a P220 and more mags may be your best bet!

The XD 5" 45 is a great pistol too that won't break the bank.... Powder River Precision makes some trigger doodads that drop in and make the take-up and reset very nice!

I have no idea what the rules of the game are, but if you already use a SigSauer for work, and there's no advantage to having a hi-cap, why not stick to a SigSauer since you're already familiar with it?

I own a nicely-used, West German, SigSauer P220 and an SA Loaded stainless, both with fixed sights. If you want to try 'em out, drop me an email.

I see all this discussion of Glocks/Sigs/XDs/M&Ps, etc., but the latest heavy metal rules state that not only must it be .45 ACP, it must meet "single stack" division criteria, which is 1911 style ONLY.

USPSA Rulebook (App. D6, Single-Stack Division):

I generally use my $325 Charles Daly, which actually runs quite well. I believe Gold Cups have lighter slide-spring for "match/target" loads?
