ok,i bit the bullet and am trying a 22 mag for the 1st time. savage mdl 93BRJ. wondering which ammo people generally find performing well,esp @ 1-200 yds. just some inital input. i know results vary from gun to gun. thanks.

The beat in my wife's stirling was highland I was shooting under 1/2" edge to edge with it at 100mtrs really happy cheap gun shoots well with cheap ammo good for her to shoot bunnies and foxes with she head shot a bunny at 150 with it she was happy and that's what counts

I use a Winchester Mod 61 in .22 mag for varmint shooting. It is suprisingly accurate for a pump action. I went through several prior to keeping this one which was the most accurate. It will shoot under 1" at 125 yards. I find the effective killing range of the .22 mag to be 150 yards. It lacks power beyond this range to effectively kill the things I shoot with it. I do not consider it a target round due to ammo cost compared to a rimfire. It is a sudden killer to 125 yards.
I do not care for the light, high speed ammo ie32 grain stuff. I tried the 50 grain, but it did not shoot as accuratly or kill as quickly as the 40 grain. I use Winchester HP bullets. 40 grain, as they shoot best in my rifle and kill well. Also accurate in my S&W mod 51. They shoot < 1/2" at 20 yards, which is fine for a very light short barreled revolver. Solids do not kill well on body shots. Just about ineffective.

for me (marlin 882)it is:
1. 30 gr hornady ammo
2. winchester supreme 34 grain (black box)
3. remington 33 gr vmax ammo (when they fired, had many misfires though)
4. winchester supreme hollow points (silver box)
5. CCI maxi mags, fmj, etc all shot about the same.
6. CCI gamepoints
7. winchester dynapoints (crap through a marlin)
i would like to try the speer personal defense rounds. i'm thinking it'll be like a subsonic .22 mag

OK, late to this but like the 22 mag ( it's a great cartridge out to 125 yds) & hope to help. Have a Volquartsen semi auto 22 mag, Kimber /Oregon bolt mod 82 22 mag, & Sako quad /Lilja bbl 22 mag. All accurate. Best ammo for all is
1. Hornady 30 g vmax ,
2. Rem 33 grain,
3. CCI 40 g HP
4. CCI Speer 30g.
5. Win 40 HP (worst, but still 3/4" @ 50 yds. )
Hornady shoots well in all. for what that's worth. Enjoy your Savage. and the low $ vs .308!
