Re: which 308 semi-auto

Accuracy--GAP AR10 / DPMS
--A well-tuned AR10/DPMS can match a good-quality bolt gun. I had a custom built AR10, and it was exceptionally accurate. After almost 20 years in the Army, I never want to scrub a BCG again. AR10s get dirty quick.
--DPMS 308 BBs are really good. I'd be more confident getting a DPMS variant from a custom manufacturer than one of the factory guns.
--Spend the money on a KAC or Geiselle trigger

Accuracy/Piston--LWRC SABR or POF 308
--I have a purchase order in for a SABR because they are local to me here in Alexandria. I'm planning on suppressing, and I don't want the blow-back from a DI gun. If there is a problem with integrating the suppressor, I know that the LWRC guys here will make it right. At my skill level, I won't see an accuracy difference between this or a DI gun.

Economy/availability-- M1A/M14--know the pedigree of these rifles because they run the gamut of great to junk very quickly. My friends in Georgia used to shoot all sorts of M1 variants--mostly old Springfields. The M14s/M1A Super Matches are accurate guns (not as tight as those above) and a lot of fun to shoot. Scope mounting can be a pain. We always shot them with iron-sights. My friends reloaded for their M1s all the time, but some claim the guns are too hard on brass. You'll want a synthetic stock.

For something less expensive, the PTRs are nice. Some badmouth clone reliability, but none of the guys I've shot with (who own PTRs) have any complaints. Accuracy is above 1MOA, so don't count on a high precision. Brass gets shot as far as the bullets with these rifles.

Re: which 308 semi-auto

If you want to go the M14 route, don't cheap out. Much like a 1911, you can tune it up and trick it out, and to keep it that way takes work. But.....when you get it there, it's tough to beat.

I had no experience with M1A/M14's, but just had to sit and do a TON of research to make sure I got what I wanted. Send me a PM if you have any questions

Re: which 308 semi-auto

I used to be a big proponent of M1As until I realized there's just much better semi-auto .308s out there. It would be my last choice.

Re: which 308 semi-auto

I've got an M1A and while it wasn't built as a precision rifle, it doesn't do too bad. Scope mounting is an issue, and while I've got a mount for it, I've stuck to iron sights.

That said, I'm currently looking at getting a precision auto-loading .308 and it'll probably be a DPMS style gun. Though, if availability wasn't an issue I'd be giving the LWRC SABR a serious look. The couple .223 LWRC guns I've seen have impressed me.

Re: which 308 semi-auto

I have yet to own a custom DPMS AR10 or one of the POF types, but I've had all the others: Armalite AR10, PTR91, HK91, DSA FAL, Springfield SAR48, Browning BAR. I recently bought an older Springfield M1A standard model with all GI parts where it counts. It was in a loose wooden stock, but came with an
ARMS scope mount that is rock solid an low enough for the irons to also be used. I just mounted it in a McMillan stock that had previously been bedded for another M1A, without re-bedding. It actually took a couple of whacks with a rubber mallet to get it in. Nothing else has been done to it. I took it to the range last weekend, and it shot .75-.80" five round groups with BH 175gr match. It did this over and over. With iron sights, I was right around 1" groups, even with its non NM sights.

Based on this, my recommendation is get an older M1A with GI parts, install either the Sadlak or ARMS mounts, and bed the thing in a McMillan stock. All in all, I have about $2100.00 in mine. I couldn't ask for more accuracy, and I could get the $ back out of it in no time.
