Considering a new rifle build in 338. Will be handloading. I love the way the 33 cals smack steel at long range, and thats my intended use. Buddy has a 338 Edge but we have had a hard time finding an accurate load that doesnt copper foul the barrel within a few shots. There is very little reloading info for it. Apparently the Edge packs a little more velocity for the same bullet over the Lapua with less powder. Have another buddy with the Lapua. He likes it alot. I have a couple of buddies with WMs and while it seems like an excellent big game rifle, it doesnt seem to shoot long distance well. I dont think the velocity is high enough. One guy with a 338WM and I went to the Wittington center a few years ago and he couldnt seem to get hits at the big steel at 1450 yards like I could with my 300WM. However, he was hitting steel much harder at 850 than I was.
My Lyman manual, 48th Edition doesnt have any 338 info beyond WM and RUM, so I cant compare them to the Edge or Lapua. Does the 49th Edition include all the 338s? May be time for a new manual.
What about the Norma? Pros/cons? How does it compare in velocity/accuracy to the others? How is the barrel life compared to the other 338s? Is it easy to get brass for? Does Redding make dies for the Norma?
What is the king of the 338s? What do yall think?
