which AK to buy

Re: which AK to buy

Are you looking to go cheap? I got a WASR-10 from Centerfire Systems for $399 with free shipping. I wasn't willing to drop $800 for a US made AK with a billet receiver. I know 3 guys with WASR-10s that seem to be happy with it. How you look at an AK is all about attitude. If you understand how crappy they look but realize they will shoot just about anything, you'll be in the right state of mind.

Re: which AK to buy

Intended purpose? Fun gun ammo blaster get a real Romy, not CAI parts kits, for cheap. Serious AK, spend some dough and get an Arsenal or Krebbs. Collecting? Get into some nice milled AKs and stick em in yer safe for a decade or two. Unless we stop this stupid "no sporting purpose" bullshit, they will be more valuable long term.

Re: which AK to buy

Get something in 5.45x39, an Interarms Tantal if you can still find one, or bite the bullet and buy into the Arsenal myth. They're actually decent rifles so long as they aren't suffering sight cant issues. The AK Forum is a decent place for info, but the membership is pretty much collector rather than shooter.

Buy it anywhere you please then in whatever caliber floats your boat. For $500 your options are limited.

Re: which AK to buy

I own the MAK90 and love it. Compared to some other ak's that I have fired, the norinco feels solid. I agree with Dang472 on the function of this rifle. It's beauty is that you can throw any junk ammo at it and it will fire nag function as intended.

Re: which AK to buy

Step one - Go to the next nearest gun show.
Step two - Find an ak in your price range.
Step three - Buy it.

I'm biased towards Romanian SAR-1 for that price. Has everything except a threaded barrel. I've never used, but haven't heard the best about the WASR's, could go either way though. For just a fun plain jane plinker, I doubt there is much difference in any of them, you'll have fun with whatever you get.

Re: which AK to buy

I think Izhmash (sp??) Makes a good AK, and they're cheap. Trouble is you have to "convert" them, which costs about $100 and an hour or two of your time.

There is an outfit that makes an adapter for about $100 that you install into the Saiga (Izhmash) 223, so it can take AR mags. Don't know if it works in other 223 AKs...

Make sure you get one that takes DOUBLESTACK magazines, and non-proprietary ones at that. I know some come for singlestacks. I believe you can grind them open to take the DS mags, but I'm not sure.

I agree. I have had nothing but good results from mine. Not top of the line, but in my opinion better than the WSARs...

Re: which AK to buy

I have an arsenal that I love so if you can find an SGL-21 for that price it would be a good one. WASR would meet your purposes but I wouldn't buy one i didn't handle first to check for canted sights and other small assembly issues.

Agreed. Get an Arsenal. Even if its just for fun. Its not fun at all to shoot a gun that gives you trouble or has canted sights
